When T1 lost to KT Rolster last week (June 29, 2024) in the LCK Summer split, the squad didn't seem to be doing well. Its players were struggling with the current LoL meta, losing team fights, and individual brilliance was absent as well. Thus, coming into the Esports World Cup 2024, T1 was far from being a tournament favorite.

However, the narrative quickly changed when the squad defeated one of the LPL's strongest teams, Bilibili Gaming. T1 showed great resilience with new draft ideas (such as Zeus' Zeri pick in the Toplane) during this match, greatly maneuvered during late-game team fights, and came out on top during 1v1s as well.

Then, the squad defeated LCS' Team Liquid in a nail-biting series. Although T1 was a favorite in this series, its opponent almost won. Gumayusi and Oner were incredible in this series, and the team won 2-1.

In the Grand Final, Game 1 was completely dominated by Top Esports, as each of this team's five players delivered a clinical performance. The first game ended in just twenty-three minutes, leading to expectations that T1 would be easily dismantled by the squad.

However, against all odds, and with the leadership of Faker and his four mechanically gifted teammates, T1 managed to turn things around. It emerged victorious in the series. Furthermore, Oner's short calls and Keria's Support performances were very impressive.

Here are the series T1 won in this tournament:

  • Quarterfinal: 2-1 vs Bilibili Gaming
  • Semifinal: 2-1 vs Team Liquid
  • Grand Final: 3-1 vs Top Esports

Faker has been playing professional League of Legends for more than a decade, and it seems like he's not stopping anytime soon. He has now won another significant international trophy, along with the MVP award in the Grand Final.

All three opponents T1 faced in the Esports World Cup 2024 banned a plethora of Faker's favorite Midlane champions. For context, Tristana is one of the most powerful Midlane champions in the current meta; Faker was unable to pick her against Top Esports in the Grand Final.

He picked Corki in the first game and lost the laning phase against Top Esports' Creme. Faker then chose champions such as Ahri, Azir, and Yasuo to win three consecutive games and, subsequently, clinch the trophy. The Yasuo pick in the final game was paramount, as it completely nullified Creme's Corki.

In the post-game interview, Faker was asked how he remains at the top of the League of Legends world after so many years. He responded by saying:

"I think it's because I am trying to improve all the time. I try to be better. And of course, I have good teammates over here and the fans."
