The League of Legends Worlds 2023 bracket stage has officially concluded with PSG Talon, GAM Esports, Team Whales, and Team BDS advancing to the best-of-five qualification matches. These matches will determine the final two teams in the Swiss Stage, which will feature top teams such as JD Gaming, T1, Gen.G, and LNG Esports. The last day of Worlds 2023 play-ins will be kickstarted by the VCS 2023 Summer Split Grand Finals rematch between Team Whales and GAM Esports.
Both teams have looked pretty strong at this event and have successfully put the VCS back on the international roadmap. Unfortunately, only one of them will be able to advance further and carry the flag of Vietnam at Worlds 2023.

Team Whales has stormed into the League of Legends international stage at Worlds 2023. All the players, except BeanJ and Bie, are playing their debut international event and have showcased incredible resilience and fortitude. The Vietnamese second seed lost the first game in both series but managed to bounce back and reverse sweep. This has earned them a direct spot in the qualification series of the play-ins stage.
Team Whales has sufficiently shown that there is more to the Vietnamese region than simply fighting and skirmishing all the time. The team displayed great macro decisions, smart rotations, and calm objective setups that many VCS teams fail to execute at global tournaments. Team Whales also boasts an extremely strong synergy in teamfights with ADC Artemis and mid laner Glory, often making huge highlight plays.
In comparison, GAM Esports had a rough start to League of Legends Worlds 2023 after suffering a 0-2 defeat against LOUD. But the VCS 2023 Summer Split champions were quick to bounce back against Movistar R7 before demolishing LOUD in the rematch to set up a repeat of the VCS 2023 Summer Split Grand Finals. GAM Esports' growth over the course of the tournament has been great to watch.
Initially, the team looked quite disjointed and had the wrong read on the meta. However, in the next two matches, the Vietnamese roster opted for teamfight-oriented compositions and played extremely clean League of Legends. GAM Esports was also quick to punish enemy mistakes and snowball the lead even further. Superstar ADC Slayder has found his footing in his debut international event after a shaky start while top laner Kiaya has been a standout at the tournament so far.
Historically, GAM Esports have had their number over Team Whales domestically, including the 3-1 victory in the VCS 2023 Summer Split Grand Finals. However, Team Whales played with substitute support, CBL, instead of Bie. The latter is often regarded as the best Vietnamese support and this affected their chances to win the title.
With Bie back in the lineup, Team Whales are looking stronger than ever and are the slight favorites to win this matchup and advance to the Swiss Stage of League of Legends Worlds 2023.
Head-to-head
Team Whales and GAM Esports have played against each other numerous times in the 2023 League of Legends season. The latter currently leads the head-to-head record 4-1.
