Teardown is an exciting sandbox game that combines elements of puzzles and action. Developed and published by Tuxedo Labs, the game takes players on a thrilling journey as the owner of a struggling demolition company. Caught in the middle of a questionable job, the protagonist becomes entangled in a web of police investigations and dubious assignments. With destructible voxels forming the basis of its levels, Teardown offers a unique gameplay experience. In this article, we will explore the gameplay, development, and release of this highly acclaimed game.

Gameplay

Teardown features levels constructed entirely of destructible voxels, providing players with the freedom to navigate and explore. Various materials make up these voxels, some requiring stronger tools for destruction. At the start of the game, players are equipped with a sledgehammer, fire extinguisher, and spraycan. The spraycan serves as a tool for marking points of interest. As players progress through the campaign, they unlock additional tools such as a blowtorch, shotgun, bombs, and a rocket launcher, each with limited uses. Planks can also be used to construct new structures, and vehicles like trucks, cranes, excavators, and boats aid in traversal and destruction. Collecting scattered valuables throughout the levels earns players cash, which can be used to upgrade their tools.

Each mission in Teardown presents players with a set of objectives, some of which are required while others are optional. In most missions, players must steal or destroy specific objects connected to a security alarm. Once the alarm is triggered, players have sixty seconds to complete the objectives and reach a getaway vehicle. Failing to do so results in a security helicopter spotting the vehicle, leading to level failure. The game provides unlimited setup time for players to plan and create an efficient path between objectives. Level overviews and route replays are presented top-down, providing a strategic perspective. Other mission types include razing buildings, moving heavy objects, avoiding attack helicopters, sneaking past security robots, and extinguishing fires. The game features a hub world that allows players to access all missions and offers a quick save option to continue progress from previous checkpoints.

TearDown Release Date and Available Platforms

TearDown had its initial release on 21 April 2022, for the Windows platform. Later, it was also made available on platforms such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. After its release, Teardown received generally positive reviews from critics. According to Metacritic, the game garnered a weighted average rating of 80/100 based on nineteen critic reviews. PC Gamer's Clayton praised Teardown as a creative sandbox platform and an endlessly enjoyable destruction sandbox. Eurogamer's Stefania Netti described it as the ultimate interactive pleasure that never gets tiresome. CD-Action's Dawid Biel found the interactions with fires, explosions, and destruction of large structures to be mesmerizing. The physics in Teardown was highly regarded, with GameSpot's Alessandro Barbosa calling them superb and a consistent source of joy. Game Rant's Dwayne Jenkins considered the game a technical marvel with an impressive level of detail in its physics.

Development and Release

Dennis Gustafsson, the founder of Tuxedo Labs, developed Teardown's proprietary game engine. After winding down his previous company, Mediocre, Gustafsson began working on the technology behind Teardown. He implemented destructible voxels with ray tracing and collaborated with former Mediocre designer Emil Bengtsson to devise gameplay concepts that utilized this technology. The two-phase heist concept, where players have unlimited setup time and limited execution time, was conceived by Gustafsson and refined through their collaboration.

Throughout the development process, Gustafsson shared updates on Twitter, generating significant interest in the game. Teardown was announced in October 2019 and released as an early access game in October 2020, featuring one-half of the campaign. The other half was added in December 2021, and the completed game was released in April 2022.

Reception and Success

Teardown received positive reactions during its early access phase and garnered favorable reviews upon its full release. Critics praised the game's physics, interactivity, graphics implementation, art style, and music. Some mixed opinions were raised regarding the campaign progression, story, and certain control elements. However, the game's support for mods was highlighted as a significant factor in its longevity. By August 2022, Teardown had sold 1.1 million copies, leading to the acquisition of Tuxedo Labs by Saber Interactive.
