Embark Studios has introduced Ranked Terminal Attack as the main ranked game mode in The Finals Season 3. This was first announced in the Summer Game Fest 2024 and the details of it are out now. While Cash Out was a beloved game mode for many, Terminal Attack seems to be a better option when it comes to competitive gameplay according to player feedback and data. The community lead for The Finals, Oscar Lundberg, addressed the community about this big change and introduced a completely new ranked system that measures a player’s skills more accurately.

This article will discuss why Ranked Terminal Attack was made the primary ranked game mode in The Finals Season 3, the new skill-based system, and how the entire ranked system will work moving forward.

In Terminal Attack, two teams of five players face off in an attack and defense style game mode. The attack team tries to carry the key to the terminal to start decrypting while the other team tries to defend it from happening. Once decryption starts, the attacking team now has to defend the terminal while the other team tries to stop the decryption.

There are three primary reasons why Embark Studios introduced Ranked Terminal Attack in The Finals Season 3.

  1. Only two teams face off instead of four, making the game feel much less chaotic.
  2. Round-based gameplay slows down the pace and offers a more strategic approach to team fights.
  3. It’s easier to pick up and understand for a larger audience.

Changes to Terminal Attack in The Finals Season 3

To make Ranked Terminal Attack viable as a competitive game mode, Embark Studios has made some changes in how the mode is played. Attackers now need to carry the key to the terminal and interact with it a couple of seconds before the decryption starts. This was done to deter attackers from rushing and throwing in the key to start an instant decryption.

This balances the game between the two teams as the attackers now need to strategically escort the key to the terminal and make sure it’s safe to start the decryption. This is intended to give a more competitive experience to Ranked Terminal Attack.

Embark Studios has incorporated a new skill-based rank point system that is more accurate in judging a player’s skills. The Ranked Score will now be visible in the game, letting you know how close you are to ranking up or ranking down. The extent to which the rank score increases or decreases after a match depends on the opponent’s skill rating.

This implies that winning against higher skill-rated players will allow you to gain more ranked scores while losing against lower skill-rated players will incur significant losses to your ranked score. This skill rating of every player will be visible to all after every match, giving valuable insight.

A new rank called Ruby has now been introduced in the game. This rank is achieved right after Diamond but with a catch. Ruby rank is reserved for only the top 500 players in The Finals. It has exclusive skin rewards for those who reach it.

However, unlike other ranks, players need to end the season in the top 500 to claim the rewards associated with the Ruby rank. This change is welcoming towards sweaty grinders who spend a lot of their time mastering the game, and Embark Studios finally gave them something to grind for.
