I was already surrounded by the PUBG fever by now. Almost every one of my younger cousins plays the game and one among them proudly labels himself a PUBG addict.
I, however, remained unfazed as I had not seen the interface of the game at the time.
For me, this was a waste of time. When everyone was lauding PUBG, I was bashing them like a judgmental elderly and mocking them for being so lifeless that they wasted their precious time on a game like this.
But then it happened. My 8-year-old cousin came to my home and installed PUBG on my mother’s powerful phone and started playing it in front of me. I asked him what it was and he told me that it was PUBG.

Now, PUBG had my attention.
After a while, watching the little one play, I was hooked towards the mobile screen.
Now, PUBG had my curiosity.
After he departed towards his home, I quickly grabbed my mother’s phone and started PUBG using the account he had created (it was named jo262 or something). Needless to say, I was a noob. I didn’t know of any rules and just started playing a classic match with 100 people (I didn’t know at the time as to how many people were playing).
The only instruction I got from my little cousin earlier was that the first task is to grab loot. So I did just that. I followed a teammate while landing and then got as much loot as possible before going on a killing spree.
I just kept following my teammate which ultimately might have been the reason I survived because I didn’t know the concept of being in the Playzone. Looking back, I think continuously following my teammate kept me inside the Playzone and safe from getting fried during the restriction period.
In the process of playing the game, I got shot a lot of times but somehow I managed to stay alive. I figured out how to use bandages and first aid kit to get my health to normal after being shot but something was irking me even then.
The ‘alive’ counter was decreasing ceaselessly. Why was my life decreasing even though I was healing myself, I wondered as I thought that the number beside ‘alive’ indicates how much life I have left.
By the time I have 10 kills, the alive counter read four. It was right then that it hit me: there are just four people alive now. The moment I had the epiphany, I heard gunshots to my right and like a noob, I ran towards the direction of it.
Luckily, I spotted the shooter and relentlessly kept shooting him until he became toast.
‘WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!’
I had now won my first ever PUBG match without knowing the rules of the game.
Also, this meant that I was more interested in the game. This meant that I was on my way to becoming something that I had been mocking for a long time.
I used to take pride in the fact that I was among the very few people who never tried or even wanted to attempt playing PUBG. And here I am now, not only playing the game but also writing on my experience of it.
Anyway, with this win, confidence reached a sky high and I needed a new name for my PUBG character, which meant making a new account. I had only just finished watching The Punisher season two and so I wanted Punisher as my name.
Needless to say, it wasn’t available. As a result, I had to settle with UltorPunisher (Ultor means punisher in Latin) – and that is where my journey begins.
Stay tuned for the rest of my PUBG journey.
