All secrets from The Witcher 4 announcement trailer

The Witcher ending is canon

Based on the choices Geralt makes during the main story, the base game of The Witcher 3 had three endings that played out different outcomes for Ciri's fate. One such ending led to the Butcher of Blaviken lying to the Emperor of Nilfgaard, Emhyr Var Emreis about Ciri being dead.

It was later revealed that Ciri was alive, and Geralt would be training her as a Witcher. This ending has also been confirmed by the latest announcement trailer, with Ciri shown becoming a monster slayer.

Tying together with our previous entry, the Silver Sword that Ciri used in the battle featured a hilt and crossguard similar to the one that Geralt gifted her in the Witcher ending during The Wild Hunt's base game.

This also confirms that this conclusion to the third title is canon, as Geralt trained Ciri in the way of a monster-slaying witcher.

Geralt of Rivia

While many people were stoked to see Cirit in action, slaying monsters with style, a big question weighing on everyone's mind was regarding the absence of the series protagonist, Geralt of Rivia.

CDPR has confirmed that Geralt will return in The Witcher 4, although not as a playable character. His story has ended in the previous game and now his adopted daughter, Ciri, will be the new face of the franchise.

Lack of Ciri's Elder Blood powers

One of the biggest parts of both the books and The Witcher 3 is Ciri's Elder Blood or Hen Ichaer. Her lineage granted her special magical powers that allowed her to control space and time. Using this ability, she was able to save her adopted parents Yennefer and Geralt from their doom, and avoided Eredin and his Wild Hunt till the events of The Witcher 3.

We also got a taste of her using the Elder Blood during certain sections of the third game, traveling between time and space to reposition when we played as Ciri. But these abilities were completely absent in The Witcher 4 announcement trailer. The most likely explanation for this is that she lost these abilities while stopping the White Frost from destroying the world at the end of the third game.

The Trial of the Grasses

The latest The Witcher 4 trailer kicked things off with Ciri being able to drink potions, as well as cast the Igni Spell. These confused many people as you need to develop Witcher mutations by going through the Trial of the Grasses if you want to wield that power. Ciri never went through the trials and she was only trained in sword art and basic knowledge of monsters.

In an exclusive interview with IGN, CDPR confirmed that the reason Ciri was able to use the Witcher potions and spells is because she has indeed gone through the Trial of the Grasses, making her a full-fledged Witcher. We will likely see this segment in the game, possibly in the prologue.

Ciri will likely be a renowned Witcher

A minor detail that subtly hinted at in the trailer is that Ciri might be one of the most famous Witcher in this installment of the game. During the 1-minute-50-second mark of the video, a man, one of the many villagers present, could be seen challenging Ciri in The Witcher 4 in an angry tone before pulling her.

However, once Ciri dropped her hood, the man's expression morphed into one of shock. It is likely that she had already made her name as a renowned Witcher, and the tales of an ashen-haired monster slayer made it to the ears of the villagers.

New Monsters

Furthermore, we got a glimpse of a new monster in The Witcher 4 trailer. The beast that Ciri was seen going up against seemed to wield a special power that could induce hallucinations and break a person's mind.

Given the game will likely take place further north in the world of The Witcher, CDPR is likely creating some new and unique beasts for players to face.
