It has been confirmed by Sucker Punch that Jin Sakai will not be returning for the sequel. Instead, the game will focus on Atsu, a female samurai warrior who seeks to enact vengeance on those who wronged her, thus taking up the mantle of the ghost.
The talented Erika Ishii, who voiced Valkyrie in Apex Legends will take on the role of Atsu and become the ghost of vengeance haunting Mount Yotei and Hokkaido. Although you might feel bad about not being able to play as Lord Sakai, keep in mind that there is a high chance that Sucker Punch may reference the Ghost of Tsushima islands in one of the Mythic Tales that Atsu will encounter in her journey.
A new hunting ground
The Ghost of Yotei will not return to the islands of Tsushima and Iki. Instead, it will be set in the northern part of the Japanese Archipelago, in what is modern-day Hokkaido.
It is unclear if Sucker Punch plans a return to Tsushima and Iki Islands as part of any storyline, but from what the trailer showed, this is highly unlikely. Atsu's journey on the path of revenge will take her through the island of Hokkaido.
A touch of Wild West
Sucker Punch is known to pay homage to various movies and their specific styles in some way or other via its games. In the case of Ghost of Tsushima, the studio paid tribute to the legendary Japanese movie director, Akira Kurosawa. The developers even added a filter called Kurosawa Mode that will make you feel like you are in one of his movies.
This time around, Ghost of Yotei is paying homage to Spaghetti Westerns. This is quite prominent in the music for the trailer, as well as some shots like the one where Atsu is riding through a field full of wild horses.
New weapons
Jin's arsenal in Ghost of Tsushima is quite restricted when it comes to weapon variety. You have your standard Tachi, Wakizashi, Long and Short bows, and your saboteur tools like smoke bombs, explosives, kunai, etc. This made sense as Ghost of Tsushima Takes place in the late 1200s when the islands were besieged by the Mongol and Yuan fleets.
Ghost of Yotei takes place almost 300 years later, during the Warring States period when weaponry was much more advanced. Besides the traditional Katana and Bows, Sucker Punch also showcased a few other weapons like the Kusari-Fundo, dual swords, and a matchlock rifle.
The Warring States
There is no other era in Japan's history as iconic as the Sengoku Jidai and the Bakkumatsu period. Both of these historical eras have countless movies, shows, games, and anime made about them. Still, Ghost of Tsushima tried something different by taking you to the 1200s failed Mongol Invasion in the land of the Rising Sun.
Well, Ghost of Yotei is set to bring you back to the Warring States or Sengoku Jidai period, specifically during the early 1600s which witnessed the final days of the bloody civil war and Tokugawa Ieyasu's rise to power. The game takes you to lawless Hokkaido as the rest of the country is in turmoil after Oda Nobunaga and his successors launched their bloody conquest of Japan.
