"this s**t is so ugly": Overwatch 2 receives backlash for new Competitive Drives update

A new Competitive Drives update was released in Overwatch 2 Season 12 on October 2, 2024. By playing and winning matches, players can now earn Drive Points, which offers interesting rewards. One of these rewards is a Signature, which is essentially a highlight or a frame around your BattleTag. This special frame shows up around your name once you've earned enough points. However, it looks like many players find it increasingly unpleasant.

A similar story appeared on X after user @ballbxtch posted a scoreboard from one of their matches. Here, one of their team members had the Signature around their name and it did not appeal to the user. They said:

"holy s**t this s**t is so ugly LMAO"

Many people find the visual of the Signature to be aesthetically unappealing. User @Jim674 reported opening the game and being taken aback quickly as soon as they noticed the Signature:

"I know. I was playing today and all of a sudden it popped on mine and in like ew"

In the original post, the Drive Signature was earned by only one team member. User @Sabotab_b suggested that perhaps it would look even worse if multiple teammates had the frame around their names.

User @A_wild_torterra hated everything about the Signature's look in Overwatch 2. They felt that it was rather fun to show off that you've played and won a lot of matches. However, this was not the way they would do it. The Signature's colors on the screen and the leaderboard didn't seem right to them and they'd rather have something else, as they said:

"I hate it tbh like it’s cool it getting shown off more like oh look what I got but it looks so ugly haven my group,team and now this colors on the screen and leaderboard it’s to much random looking sh*t also makes the default look unfinished like this is what it should of been"

The highlight around the BattleTag appears in the intros, on the scoreboard, and at other points during the game. User @codannie was taken by surprise over the whole ordeal as they were not expecting it:

"i thought it was just gonna be on highlight intros and that was cool but wtf is this"

Finally, user @_StrangePanda_ felt that the Signature in Overwatch 2 was just overstimulating. Its presence was overwhelming and if multiple members of the team had it, it would just look unappealing.

The Competitive Drive updates in Overwatch 2 will become a recurring phenomenon for the three seasons, starting Season 12. This initiative was taken to ensure players push a little extra for more rewards at the end of each season.

This also implies that Signatures will keep making their return every single season. Regardless of rank, players who grind the game can earn the highest level of the Signatures, and with the beginning of every new competitive drive, these BattleTag highlights will also be reset.
