The first large room and spiral staircase
After battling your way through a couple of rooms, you’ll enter a large chamber with a thin central path, swinging spiked balls, and icy terrain. Equip the Stone Shoes (acquired in Elderm Mountains) to safely traverse the slippery ground.
Jump carefully to avoid the swinging hazards and progress to the next area, where you’ll encounter a spiral staircase with exits leading up, down, left, and right.
Upper Path
Climb the stairs and use the Ventus Bracelet and Double Jump to cross the gaps on the top floor. Here, you'll meet Count McGuire's wife and children. After some dialogue shedding light on the castle's events, they'll give you the Ivory Key, a critical item you will need in the dungeon later on.
Lower Path
It is quicker to jump from the top floor to the base of the spiral staircase instead of running backward. From there, you can climb up to the middle level and take either left or right exits. However, the right path is limited at this point. Hence, go out the door on the left exit and proceed into the East Wing.
Optional:
- Raval Ore x200: In the swinging spiked ball room, fall off a broken ledge into an alcove containing a chest.
- Topaz: Climb the spiral staircase and then fall through one of the holes. Use Double Jump and the Ventus Bracelet to hit the chest.
The East Wing
1) Platforming Challenges
The East Wing is home to solitary platforms of enemies. When you fall in here, you'll return to the lower floor. So, take extra precautions with Double Jump and the Ventus Bracelet. Follow these directions:
- Jump north over the platforms until you find a dead end.
- Turn left and go south.
- Continue left and then north at the next fork.
- From here, the road becomes linear to a save point and your first boss battle in Valestein Castle.
2) Optional items in the East Wing
- Battle Armour: Obtained on the bottom floor of the staircase, or when falling from above. Climb the spiked wall to reach the treasure chest.
- Raval Ore x500: Before reaching the fork, Double Jump with the Ventus Bracelet to an off-screen platform to the right.
These items provide a pretty good boost, so collect them before proceeding further.
3) Boss: Death Faleon
Death Faleon brings an elemental system similar to Ligaty's earlier fight in the game. This boss changes color during the battle, and each color dictates the damage type it's vulnerable to:
- Green: Wind attacks.
- Red: Fire attacks.
- Yellow: Earth attacks.
- White: Sword attacks.
Stick to the corresponding attack type while avoiding its straightforward patterns. Upon defeating it, you’ll earn the Organ Pipe, a quest item required for later, and unlock new doors in the castle.
Exploring the West Wing
With the new paths open, head back to the spiral staircase and take the newly unlocked door on the right. This leads to an exterior courtyard with two options: a central building (currently inaccessible) and an open door to the left. Head left for now.
1) Dark rooms and false platforms
The West Wing is filled with dark rooms and false platforms. Put Nightfire Gem (acquired earlier from Aida) into your equipment to light up the area and reveal which platforms are safe. If you step on a false platform, quickly jump off to avoid falling. Use this illuminated route to the second save point to strengthen yourself for another boss fight.
2) Optional items in the West Wing
- Raval Ore x320: In a spiked room. Use the Terra Bracelet to break a wall and open a chest.
- Battle Shield: At the bottom of the spiral staircase. Climb the wall and use the Terra Bracelet to break the cracked section.
- Raval Ore x380: In the fake platform area. Jump northeast carefully to reach the chest.
- Raval Ore x250: After platform section, reach on a high ledge by using Double Jump and the Ventus Bracelet.
At the far end, you’ll find the second save point and face Zellfel Zam Schultiger, the West Wing’s boss.
3) Boss: Zellfel Zam Schultiger
This boss wolf fights in a side-scrolling arena; adding a unique twist:
- Dodge its fire-breathing by positioning yourself behind.
- Use the Ventus Bracelet to jump over its lunges and the wolves it summons.
- After his bouncing attack, the boss stalls for a beat, allowing you to land great damage.
Conquering Zellfel lets you claim the Holy Cross, the last item needed for unlocking the dungeon located below the chapel.
Unlock the Dungeon
Go back to the courtyard and move into the central chapel. Pick up Elena’s Silver Pendant from the floor, then place the Ivory Key, Organ Pipe, and Holy Cross at the organ to reveal a secret passage. Descend into the dungeon, which is filled with powerful enemies and tricky layouts.
1) The Dungeon
Follow the linear path until you reach a larger open area with stairs leading up and down:
- Take the downward stairs: Go forward in the next room, then go right out to find the last save point of Valestein Castle.
- Eastern exit: Leads to the Clock Tower (not yet accessible).
- Northern exit: Leads to the final boss of Valestein Castle.
2) Optional items in the Dungeon
- Battle Saber: Climb the stairs in the large room, loop back to a upper floor and jump across the falling platforms to find the chest with the sword.
The Battle Saber is one of the most powerful weapons in the game. Immediately upgrade to get the most out of it.
Final Boss: Zirduros
Zirduros, the mechanical guardian, is the final obstacle you will face in Valestein Castle. Although its design seems like futuristic, it's still vulnerable to your old-fashioned weapons and spells.
- Attack Zirduros from behind to avoid most of its offensive capabilities.
- Use the Terra Bracelet to mitigate damage and maintain proximity.
- Activate Double Boost as soon as it’s available to deal massive damage and heal simultaneously.
Once defeated, Zirduros drops the Clock Tower Key, allowing access to the next dungeon. You’ll also rescue Elena and Aida’s grandson, Bob, bringing a sense of closure to the Valestein Castle walkthrough in Ys Memoire The Oath In Felghana
