Video Game News: Now you can play the SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D on PC

Wolfenstein 3D, the forerunner to Doom and the basic template for all first-person shooters that came after it, has seen its share of ports across the video game world. So, what happens when an ultra-violent shooter involving monsters, Nazis, and even Adolf Hitler himself is ported over to the SNES, a system created by a company with very strict rules regarding the content of the games made for it? You get a beautiful, neutered mess, that's what.

The port, according to our friends at Bloody Disgusting, was completed over the course of three weeks - two and a half weeks less than Howard Warshaw had to develop E.T. for the Atari 2600 - while id Software was creating Doom. Nintendo required id to remove all the blood (like they did for the Mortal Kombat port) as well as all the Nazi imagery and symbols - including Hitler's mustache.

No, you read that correctly.

So, of course, who wouldn't want to play that? Well, modder (and probably snappy dresser, we imagine) AstroCreep has made it possible for those of you who don't want to find the physical cart or emulate it or whatever other excuse you can come up with. The mod will require both a copy of Wolfenstein 3D 1.4 and ECWolf (which you can get here if you don't have it.)

It's not a perfect port - Mr. Creep fully admits that he got "a bit impatient" and added some placeholder graphics as well as a modified HUD in order to get the project done. But, really, if that bothers you and you're really going to be that picky about it... seek help.
