Wander: A non-combat MMO will be coming to the PS4 next year

So far most MMO’s have been mostly restricted to the PC, but it’s good to see that there’s been a slight change with a few MMO’s releasing for consoles as well such as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and Destiny. And now there is a brand new title which can be added to that list. Wander will be one of the newest titles coming to the PS4 but it differs from other MMO genres in one huge way, the game is a purely non-combat MMO.

According to the games writer and character designer, Crystal Flynn, the concept for the game was originally developed by Loki Davision who felt that too many game focused on violence, so he wanted to create a game that would fill a niche that he felt desperately needed filling. The game will focus more on the storytelling and exploring aspect and how players react and interpret their surroundings. The inspiration for the game is taken from Loki’s own experience as a traveller.

“I was somewhat of a nomad for a long time. I wandered around Central Asia, Siberia, the Arctic and Himalayas. Growing up I played a lot of MUDs (text based MMO games) and wanted to make a game that was atmospheric, relaxing and multiplayer. Wander draws on a lot of that experience. I wanted to collaboratively explore in a game.”

Players will begin the game in a deep forest with no memory of who they are and in a form that is completely new to them. They must then gather clues and even audio cues to guide them in their exploration of the game. Crystal Flynn has commented that those are not the only clues that players will be able to pick up on

"During your journey you may also hear the mysterious, siren-like tones of opera singers, and following these songs will lead you to even more exciting discoveries, like the ability to change your shape and acquire new ways of exploring the world,"

Flinn has stated that the game will have several playable classes such as the Oren, a walking, sentient tree that players will begin as; The Griffin, a creature with the power of flight; The Azertash, an aquatic creature that can swim and breathe under water and the Hira, a creature that is swift and agile. Each of these characters will have unique back stories, culture and variants for the player to discover.

Wander is certainly going to be the most unique entry for an MMO game. The title will also be available to play at the upcoming PlayStation Experience public gaming show in Las Vegas. The game is set to launch next year in March and will be available for the PS4 and PC.
