Penalty shootouts are probably a source of one of the most nerve-wracking moments on FIFA 17, especially with the new penalty taking technique introduced in the game. Scoring five out of five penalties is now a mammoth task but not for YouTuber DailyTradingTips, who, out of curiosity goes to the extent of scoring 100 goals between both teams.

He tried to find out what happens in the game when one team scores a century of goals in penalty shootouts.

EA have radically changed the penalty shootout system in FIFA 17. In earlier editions of the game, one simply had to press shoot and point in the desired direction of the shot with the left analog whereas, in the latest edition, the analog has to be pushed in the desired direction before the power is applied.

Once the run-up starts, the desired direction can be changed and the slightest mistake in the application of power can result in the ball sailing over the bar or hardly reaching the goal line.

Heart of the matter

The game starts encountering problems when both the teams are even at 32 goals each. In spite of all penalties being scored, the penalty-score indicator at the top of the screen either shows red circles, indicating that not a single penalty has been scored or just a blank circle.

By the time total number of goals scored reach 74, there are no green lights whatsoever on the scoresheet. However, the number being shown is correct even when the score is 50-50. When one team finally reaches the 100 goal mark, the scoreboard still shows the correct numbers but without either green or the red lights appearing.

What’s next?

The circles indicating the status of goals scored in the shootout stop working after the 100 penalty mark, which shows that the makers, EA, never took into account the possibility that a century of goals would be scored in penalty shootouts.

Realistically too, it is highly unlikely that a penalty shootout will last for this duration as the new technique will ensure that some penalties are surely missed by the players.

Author’s Take

We admire DTT’s consistent efforts at finding new angles in the FIFA games but this incident seems to be a quite unlikely to occur in FIFA encounters. Such efforts have led to a number of glitches being detected and consequently ironed out by the gaming giant.

Such activities only constructively benefit the game, its players and makers and are always welcome.
