Crab pots can be placed in almost all types of water bodies such as lakes, ponds, oceans, sewers, and rivers. To use a crab pot, place them in a water body, add some fish bait, and return the next day. If you’re lucky, you will find the fish you were looking for or, a piece of trash if you’re unlucky.

The items you receive in the pots will depend on the type of water you’re using. Here are all the items you can find in a crab pot:

Placement location

Catch

Ponds, lakes, rivers, and sewers (Freshwater)

Crayfish, Periwinkle, Snail

Ocean (Saltwater)

Clam, Cockle, Crab, Lobster, Mussel, Oyster, Shrimp

Anywhere else

Broken CD, Broken Glasses, Driftwood, Soggy Newspaper, Trash

Unfortunately, crab pots will only reward you with items of normal quality. Hence, fishing with a good quality Fishing Rod is still the way to go for serious fish breeding or trading.

But if you hate fishing and want to complete the Fish Bundle of Community Center, then going for the Trapper profession will make the journey easier.

If you want to use crab pots as a fishing replacement in Stardew Valley then it’s recommended that you choose the Trapper profession upon reaching Fishing Level five.

The Trapper profession route will allow you to craft crab pots using two copper bars and 25 pieces of wood. It provides you with two crab pot exclusive bonuses: Luremaster and Mariner.

Luremaster makes sure that crab pots need no bait for using them, while Mariner will prevent rubbish items like Broken CDs, Trash, Soggy newspapers, etc. from appearing in your pots. Both are pretty useful upgrades for crab pot fishing so choose the one that feels the better for you.

This concludes our guide on crab pots in Stardew Valley. Overall, they are a great source of accumulating fish that can help you complete specific in-game objectives but if you’re searching for high-quality species or various ocean treasures, traditional fishing is the way to go.
