Tyr is a significant God of War Ragnarök character, essentially Kratos' equal in Norse mythology. This figure has been at the center of several storyline speculations and has received a lot of attention in the game's marketing. His position in the plot, though, was a mystery until the game was released and his place in God of War Ragnarok certainly shocked a few fans.

Disclaimer: This article will contain details revolving around Týr and will contain major spoilers for God of War Ragnarok. Readers are advised to proceed at their own discretion.

Who is Týr?

Týr is the Aesir God of War, Law, Justice, and Honor. He is also Odin and Hroor's son, as well as Thor's half-brother. He is the God of War, yet he also supports peace and was one of the few individuals who the giants trusted. Odin, on the other hand, sees Týr as a challenge to his rule and enslaves him in Asgard. However, he also spreads the story claiming Týr is dead, and everyone assumes Odin killed him.

What happens to Týr in God of War Ragnarok?

Early in God of War Ragnarok, it is revealed that Atreus believes Tyr is not dead but imprisoned. This is when he tells Kratos that he has been discreetly exploring the Jotnar shrines they discovered in God of War (2018) and uncovered passageways behind them that lead to the true versions of the stories represented on the shrine's murals.

One of these legends convinces Atreus that Tyr is still alive someplace, so he and Kratos go on a quest for him, finally finding him locked in a dwarven mine in Svartalfheim. As the game progresses, Tyr advises and aids Kratos and Atreus on their voyage, but they finally find that Tyr was truly Odin hidden in plain sight. The All-Father then departs with the duo surprised and shocked, giving the impression that the actual Tyr is long dead and was most likely assassinated by Odin.

Does Týr die in God of War Ragnarok?

After Odin demonstrates that he was masquerading as Tyr for most of the early stages of the game, it leaves the appearance that the actual Tyr was dead. His true story, however, begins after the battle of Asgard and the end of Ragnarok. After the battle, chunks of Asgard fall all over the realms, including a prison falling in Niflheim near the Raven Tree.

Several entities were imprisoned there, but Tyr is the main focus. Although Kratos can not believe his eyes at first, the Aesir God of War is alive, and he is left to wander the realms alone, contemplating the events that occurred during his captivity.
