When you die in Black Myth Wukong, you will have to re-play through a section of the game you were just in. However, it's not quite as punishing as other Soulslikes when your character loses their life. Knowing whether or not you have to completely regrind all of your Will (Runes in Elden Ring) should be made clear before progressing deep into the game. This could be a deal-breaker for some players.
If your character dies in Black Myth Wukong, you are sent back to the last visited Keeper’s Shrine, the same place where you respec. This is also the only place in the game where you can make a hard save. But do you lose anything? Let's find out more about that.
What kind of punishment does Black Myth Wukong give players when they die?

Black Myth Wukong is fairly generous with players when they die - technically speaking. If you should perish in combat, you’ll be sent back to the last Keeper’s Shrine you visited without losing any of your Will. That means you won’t have to chase down the entity that defeated you in the first place, risking death a second time by picking your Will off the ground.
Any equipment, items, or spells you may have unlocked before you died stay with you, giving you no real punishment to speak of. The only potentially challenging part of death in Black Myth Wukong is that all the enemies respawn. If you were facing a particularly hard time with one of the enemies in the wild, you would still have to go back and fight them again in all likelihood.
Some Soulslike fans won’t be keen on doing so, since they may prefer going back and tracking down lost Runes/currency if they die. This change to the Soulslike formula lets players new to the genre face fewer stiff punishments for defeat in the game.
Some areas will remain challenging, but at least the player can go back with all their assorted skills and Will intact. It's up to the player to fight all the enemies again, to get to where they were previously.
That said, keep an eye on your health and stop at Keeper’s Shrines whenever possible. Your health can be restored here, and you can also make a manual save rather than relying on autosaving.
