Jenna Nicole Mourey, also known as Jenna Marbles, was one of the original pioneers of YouTube. She gained immense popularity on the platform in 2010 after uploading a video titled How to Trick People into Thinking You're Good Looking. One of her other videos, How to Avoid Talking to People You Don't Want to Talk To, gained significant attention and was featured in The New York Times and ABC News in August 2011.
However, in 2020, Jenna Marbles announced her decision to step away from social media and content creation. As of June 2023, she has not posted any new content on her YouTube channel for almost three years, marking the end of an era for her followers.
What happened to YouTuber Jenna Marbles?
Over the course of a decade, Jenna Marbles amassed a following of 20 million subscribers and garnered over three billion views on YouTube. However, on June 25, 2020, Marbles uploaded her final video to her YouTube channel (which has since been deleted), where she informed her subscribers that she was departing from YouTube.
Although Jenna had a successful career, it was not without controversy. For instance, she faced backlash during the Black Lives Matter movement when old clips resurfaced of her attempting a blackface makeup look. One such video was posted in 2011, where Jenna imitated Nicki Minaj.
Jenna was also involved in other instances of controversy, such as her appearance in a 2011 music video where she seemingly contributed to racist lyrics against Asians with her vocals. There were also other clips where she made offensive remarks, downplayed other women, and engaged in questionable behavior.
In her now-deleted video, she addressed the allegations by stating:
"I do want to tell you how unbelievably sorry I am if I ever offended you by posting this video or by doing this impression, and that that was never my intention. It’s not okay. It’s shameful. It’s awful. I wish it wasn’t part of my past."
She revealed that she intends to retire her channel:
"For now, I just can’t exist on this channel. I think I’m just going to move on from this channel for now...I don’t know how long it’s going to be. I just want to make sure the things I’m putting in the world aren’t hurting anyone. So I need to be done with this channel, for now or for forever."
What is she up to now?
It is safe to say that Jenna Marbles has distanced herself from the online community. Her social media accounts remain largely inactive, and little is known about her current endeavors. However, a significant announcement regarding her personal life did surface recently.
In April 2021, fans of Jenna Marbles received their first update about her life in nearly two years. During a livestream on Twitch, Julien Solomita (her long-time partner) announced that he and Jenna were engaged, exciting their fans with the news. In December 2022, Julien took to Instagram to reveal that they had gotten married:
Jenna and Julien have been in a relationship for nine years and have five dogs together, including one named Marbles, after which her YouTube channel is named. Several of their furry friends were in the wedding photos, capturing the joyful occasion.
Earlier this year (January 2023), Julien Solomita revealed that the couple's house was invaded by a woman. In an Instagram Story, Solomita claimed that the intruder entered their residence through the back door, adding that he "immediately subdued" her with pepper spray.
Eventually, the stalker was apprehended by the police:
"Today, someone broke into our house. A woman, that we don't know, entered our home unannounced. Upon her entering our back door, I immediately subdued her with OC (oleoresin capsicum)/pepper spray and I was able to lock her out. I called the police and she was apprehended and arrested."
Julien Solomita confirmed that Jenna Marbles and their pets were unharmed. He also explained why he chose to share details about the harrowing incident:
"While this person is a complete stranger to me, they have been harassing me at my home throughout the last two months. This was something that, for safety reasons, I was doing my best to keep offline. But, we were notified that a media outlet had information on today's event and are planning on running a story. So, I wanted to hear what happened from me, first."
Even though Jenna Marbles has stepped away from the public eye, she is still revered as one of the foundational figures of the YouTube community, and her impact on the platform continues to be felt.
