Halo as a franchise isn't having the best time and to make matters worse, about 90 GB of data about the series was leaked recently. Known as the Halo Digsite Archive, the leak contains a plethora of content dating all the way back to 1998 up until the Halo MCC, including internal documents, multiple beta builds, unreleased content, and developer tools. However, quite fortunately, the leaked data did not have any details about upcoming games or content planned for the future.

Halo Digsite Archive: Everything that you need to know
The Halo Digsite Archive is a massive 90 GB leak containing a lot of crucial data from 1998 to MCC. Apart from the aforementioned leaks, a piece of Bungie's Technical Manual and other asset files were also made public. The community has already been able to recreate a playable build for one of the first prototypes, which was the precursor to the FPS franchise and presented as a third-person shooter.

We've already discussed the content of the leak but the origin is even more interesting. 343 Industries, later renamed to Halo Studios, hired a group of modders to bring back unreleased content from past games to life for the Master Chief Collection.
It wasn't paid work and the responsibility for restoring the cut content was assigned to the Digsite team. The team was provided with all the essentials including access to the cut content and developer tools that they could use to bring these projects to life.
According to reports, the origin of this leak can be traced back to this Halo Digsite project and this has been confirmed by members who have already departed from the team.

Now you might be wondering why people left the Digsite project. Well, as we have mentioned earlier, it was unpaid work and the team couldn't afford to continue with the project without getting paid.
As for the source of the leak, team members at Digsite have claimed that they had nothing to do with the leaks. @DogbrainLudus on X, a former member of the team, has stated that neither they nor any members of the Digsite team that had recently left the project were responsible for the leak.
So although we know the source, we do not exactly know how this leak came about and who was responsible for it. Either way, things don't seem to be working well for Microsoft, especially for the Digsite team since they worked hard to bring all this content to the fans for free.
Still, as we've mentioned earlier, upcoming plans for the franchise haven't been leaked, and the archive only contains data and content for the last 26 years.
