In the history of Warhammer 40k, one of the most important events is the 'Horus Heresy'. Horus was one of the Primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind. They were considered the Emperor's children. However, some of them had other loyalties and intentions, which resulted in a grand mutiny led by Horus.

This civil war changed the Imperium of Man forever. The legions of Space Marines were split into two. Those who stayed true to their vows and joined the war at the Emperor's side were given the title of 'Loyalists', and the others were given the name of 'Traitor Legions'. Currently, most of these Traitor Legions are blessed/cursed by Chaos Gods and turned into Chaos Marines.
When the Horus Heresy came to an end, the Loyalist Legions were split into Chapters, each with 1,000 Marines. Later, the geneseed of each of these chapters was used to make other Space Marine Chapters. An example of this would be the use of Blood Angels' geneseed to make Imperial Fists.
However, it's not always true that Successor Chapters are made of offspring created with other Chapters' gene-seed. There are instances where a particular incident has forced a legion to break into smaller, more specialized Chapters to battle a particular threat. On the other hand, there are also Legions that never had any Successor Chapters, such as Space Wolves and Salamanders.
