God of War Ragnarök takes place three years after the events of God of War (2018). God of War Ragnarök is the ninth chapter in Sony Interactive Entertainment's God of War series, created by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The 2022 release will begin where the 2018 release left off, following Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they explore the nine realms in an attempt to prevent Ragnarök from occurring while defeating adversaries from all over. God of War Ragnarök is set to release worldwide on November 9, 2022.
What is the story of God of War Ragnarök?
Having beaten and killed Baldur at the end of God of War (2018), God of War Ragnarök takes place approximately three years after that and picks off with Fimbulwinter drawing to a close. It’s after this that the heavily prophesied Ragnarok takes place, which forces Kratos and his teenage son Atreus to face what could happen. However, the duo won’t just be facing the Norse’s version of an apocalypse but also enemies they made in God of War (2018) including Baldur’s mother Freya, his half-brother Thor, father Odin, and a few others.
At the same time, Kratos will also have to deal with uncovering the fact that Atreus is a half-god/half-giant named Loki alongside a few new characters including Angrboda (one of the last remaining giants according to Sony Santa Monica) and Tyr (Thor and Baldur’s half-brother and Odin’s son).
What happened in God of War 2018?
The game begins with the death of Kratos’ second wife and Atreus’ mother Faye after which the duo set off to fulfill her last request, which was for her ashes to be spread at the highest peak of the Nine Realms. However, before they can begin, Kratos is attacked by a mysterious tattooed stranger with god-like powers although the former Greek God of War believes he kills him and sets off with Atreus.
Along their journey, the duo met many people including Dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, a mysterious but friendly Witch of the Woods, and the friendly World Serpent, Jörmungandr, the last remaining giant. However, over the course of their journey, they find that the mysterious tattooed stranger is alive and talking to Mimir. He then helps Kratos and Atreus on their journey, even telling them that the stranger is Baldur ( Aesir and Odin’s son), the Witch of the Woods is his mother Freya (a Vanir goddess) and that the highest peak in the Nine Realms is actually in Jötunheim.
The road to Jötunheim has, however, been blocked by Odin and Thor but Mimir tells the duo off another way and they set off. Over the course of that, Atreus collapses because of a mental conflict in which a god believes himself to be mortal. This forces Kratos to make a detour to help save him, unearthing his old weapons, the Blades of Chaos, in the process. Eventually, Atreus is cured, and Kratos informs him that both he and his son are gods and they continue their journey.
Baldur eventually ambushes them right before they reach Jötunheim, the duo nearly loses the first battle only to discover that he is Freya’s son and has a spell on him that makes him nearly immortal. But Freya’s spell is broken by Atreus which allows Kratos to fight and successfully defeat the Aesir god, although Baldur attempts to strangle his mother which forces Kratos to kill him. She doesn’t take it well and swears revenge on Kratos, as the father and son duo walk away towards Jötunheim.
There they discover many secrets including that Faye was a giant and that Atreus is a half-god/half-mortal and half-giant who was named Loki by his mother. However, upon their return, Mimir informs them that the three-year-long Fimbulwinter has begun, which signals the beginning of Ragnarök.
