Where to buy a house in Skyrim?
In the game Skyrim, you can purchase houses in various cities and towns throughout the game world. To buy a house, you will need to speak with the NPC (non-player character) who is the steward for the city or town in which you want to buy a house. The steward will usually be found in the local castle or town hall. You can ask them about purchasing a house, and they will provide you with a list of available properties and their prices. You will need to have sufficient gold to buy the house, as well as any additional fees or taxes that may be required.
Breezehome
The first house on the list is Breezehome, located in the city of Whiterun. The cost of this house is 5000 Gold and it can be found on the right side of the city as soon as you enter it. To unlock this house, you must speak to Proventus Avenicci in Dragonsreach after completing the Dragons Rising story mission. This house comes with the perk of having access to a workbench and an alchemy lab.
Hjerim
Another house you can purchase is Hjerim, located in the North West corner of the city of Windhelm, across from the House of Cruel Sea. This house costs 12,000 gold and it can be unlocked by completing the quest "Blood on the Ice" in Windhelm. This quest can be triggered by visiting the graveyard past midnight. After completing the quest, you must speak to Jorleif in the Palace of Kings to buy the house.
Honeyside
Honeyside is a house located in Riften, found at the end of the corner, on the right side as you enter the city. It costs 8000 Gold. To purchase this property, players need to impress Jarl Laila Law-Giver of Riften by completing the skooma dealer quest, which can be started by speaking to Wujeeta in the Riften Fishery, increasing your reputation with Riften's citizens by completing tasks for them, and reporting back to the Jarl. Afterward, speak to Steward Anuriel to buy the house, which comes with the perk of having access to a boat and a small dock.
Proudspire Manor
Proudspire Manor is located in the city of Solitude, found in the center of the high street, next to the Skyrim Faction Bards College. This house costs 25,000 Gold, and it can be bought on the way to becoming Solitude's Thane. To do this, players must speak to Falk Firebeard in Solitude, and clear out a nearby cave as part of the quest. After completing the quest, speak to Jarl Elisif the Fair and then Falk Firebeard again to purchase the property.
Vlindrel Hall
Lastly, Vlindrel Hall is located in Markarth, found at the top of a steep set of stairs as soon as you enter the city. The cost for this house is 8000 Gold. The easiest way to purchase this property is by siding with the Stormcloaks in the Civil War and then speaking to Jarl Thongvor Silver-Blood. Alternatively, players can visit Understone Keep within Markarth, speak to Jarl Igmund, earn his trust and complete his questline, where Steward Raerek will allow you to buy the property.
It's worth noting that owning a house in Skyrim not only gives you a place to store your items, but also grants certain perks and bonuses, and an NPC follower (a housecarl) to assist you in combat and carrying items. Additionally, these are not the only houses available for purchase in the game, others such as Lakeview Manor and Windstad Manor also available.
