BioWare's upcoming release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is an action role-playing game that will serve as the fourth entry in the Dragon Age franchise. The Veilguard will be a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition and will follow the story ten years after the Inquisition takes place. The game's events occur in the fictional world of Thedas, the same as Inquisition.

The Creative Director for the fourth main installment in the Dragon Age series wanted to give the game a more narrative-driven style. Therefore, the devs decided to utilize the Tevinter Imperium part of the game's world, Thedas.

In this article, we take a look at the map where Dragon Age: The Veilguard takes place and how it brings back components from the previous game in the series while introducing certain new elements.

How the world of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is linked to Inquisition

In prior games from the series, you could import World State from save files or the web program Dragon Age Keep. However, in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will be able to alter the World State while creating your characters. Game Director Corinne Busche has disclosed that because of the newer technology available during the making of Veilguard, the developers were able to implement this system within the game client itself.

Since the story takes place 10 years after Inquisition, you will be able to recreate your Inquisitor from the previous Dragon Age title and even witness some prior Dragon Age characters reappearing in the Veilguard. It was further explained by the Creative Director, John Epler, that only three specific choices made in Inquisition would transfer over to Veilguard.

This is because the decisions made in prior games, such as the identity of the southern Divine, had little impact on events in Northern Thedas, where Veilguard takes place. Hence, this allows them to avoid contradicting previous choices made by individual players.

Notable gameplay and world design elements in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

During character creation, you will be able to select a lineage from options like Human, Dwarf, Qunari, or Elf. There are even different fighting classes to choose from: Rogue, Mage, or Warrior. Lastly, you can also choose from one of six character backstories that are linked to individual factions. Unlike in prior games, customization options also include character visual sliders where players can meticulously craft a protagonist of their choosing.

There will be numerous companion options found throughout the world of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The party system, however, will see a change as the number gets reduced to only three members. Instead of an open-world design of Thedas, Veilguard has a system in which players navigate the map using the Eluvian network that shines a spotlight on the game's linear storytelling.

Additionally, as revealed in the gameplay trailer, Dragon Age: The Veilguard's pause-and-play gameplay mechanic is quite similar to Inquisition, with the floating camera perspective being the only new addition. It allows you to bring the game to a halt so that you can access a plethora of combat and strategy options.
