God of War contains more crafting materials than any previous game in the series, and the Chaos Flames are among the most recent additions that Kratos will need during his quest. From Chaos Flames, Frozen Flames, Dust of Realms, Asgardian Steel to Smoldering Ember, World Serpent Scale and Dragon Tears, all of these are used to upgrade Kratos and Atreus’ weapons and armor over the course of God of War in order to help them keep up with the tougher opponents.
What are the Chaos Flames?
Chaos Flames are used to upgrade the Blades of Chaos in the same way that Frozen Flames strengthen the Leviathan Axe in God of War. The blades are Kratos’ token weapon and are iconic to the series as they’ve been in his possession from God of War 1. However, while Kratos starts God of War (2018) with the Leviathan Axe and thus can upgrade it from the start, he won’t be able to find the Chaos Flames until after he gets his Blades of Chaos back.
Where to find the Chaos Flames
There are four Chaos Flames to find throughout the game, three of which are part of the main story and all of which are obtained through boss fights.
Chaos Flame 1
Kratos receives the first Chaos Flame after defeating the Bridge of the Damned keeper, Mattugr Helson, in Helheim. He is a troll in God of War with the power to vanish and create orbs that hunt out Kratos.
Chaos Flame 2
The second Chaos Flame is discovered shortly after the first in Tyr's Temple during God of War's The Black Rune chapter. In this battle, Kratos must defeat two trolls rather than one.
Chaos Flame 3
The next Chaos Flame has returned to Helheim and can be found on the second visit. Continue along the main route till Kratos approaches the gate that Wind of Hel has locked. To obtain the third Chaos Flame, open the portal and defeat the First Traveler.
Chaos Flame 4
The final Chaos Flame resides in Muspelheim, where Kratos receives it as a reward for fighting Gondul, one of several corrupted Valkyries. This is an optional challenge and thus missed by most gamers but after defeating Gondul, Kratos gets the Raging Fire of Muspelheim which he can exchange with Brok for the final Chaos Flame to upgrade his Blades of Chaos.
When does Kratos get the Blades of Chaos back in God of War?
As Kratos isn’t a fan of his previous life as a Greek God, the star of the God of War series doesn’t start with the Blades of Chaos. Instead, he uses the Leviathan Axe, which he inherited from his second wife Faye, for most of the early parts of the game. However, after Atreus falls ill and Freya asks for the heart of a bridgekeeper from Helheim, she also warns him that the Axe’s frost powers would be useless in Helheim.
This forces Kratos’ hand and he goes back to his house, from the start of the game, to reach into a crawlspace and unwrap the Blades of Chaos that he hid there. After that, the weapons can be switched and used by the former Greek God of War whenever he wants.
How to upgrade the Blades of Chaos in God of War?

Much like the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos also has its own skill tree and the ability to be upgraded all the way to level 5. However, to upgrade it even by one level, one has to collect a Chaos Flame, then speak to Brok or Sindri, and you’ll have the option to enhance the Blades.
