Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the late 1800s. Hogwarts Legacy is a magical action role-playing video game set in the Harry Potter Universe. The game was announced in September 2020 and after many delays is set to be released in 2023. It will allow players to become a student at the renowned Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and experience a sprawling magical world filled with adventures.
When does Hogwarts Legacy take place?
According to Avalanche Software, Hogwarts Legacy will take place in the late 1800s, prior to the events of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. The year 1890 appears to be a safe choice and this date is based on a screenshot of a newspaper from The Daily Prophet shown in the game's early March 2022 gameplay video (at around the 4:54 mark).
It means that since Harry Potter was born in 1980 in the books, Hogwarts Legacy takes place around a century before The Boy Who Lived. The first Fantastic Beasts film (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) is set in 1926, but Newt Scamander was born in 1897, according to the film's plot which means that he'd also be a little too young to appear in Hogwarts Legacy.
However, if the time period is indeed the late 1800s, there is a chance that Dumbledore could make an appearance as he attends Hogwarts in 1892 as a student, but nothing has been confirmed.
What is the plot of Hogwarts Legacy?
There are two plots running concurrently in Hogwarts Legacy. The first focuses on your character's personal growth as they discover the secrets of their forefathers, who were a part of a legendary magical bloodline. In these adventures, we will work with Professor Fig to learn more about the ancient lineage and the frightening magic that its members can unleash. They plainly want to recreate Harry and Dumbledore's search for the Horcruxes for us.
The second plot, on the other hand, follows a goblin rebellion. A group of malevolent human wizards, reportedly led by Victor Rookwood, assist Ranrok in his rebellion against wizard-kind but you don't know why until later in the game. Goblins will make up a substantial amount of your foes, and clearing goblin hideouts will take up a large portion of your open-world exploring.
Which Harry Potter characters could appear in Hogwarts Legacy?
As the game is set in the late 1800s, there is a small chance that Albert Dumbledore could make a cameo in the game although nothing has been confirmed. However, beyond that, the chances of any major characters from the Harry Potter universe appearing in the game is unlikely as Hogwarts Legacy is set around a century before the events in the books and movies.
But fans of the film and book series will know characters such as Phineas Nigellus Black, Nearly Headless Nick, and Peeves the Poltergeist.
