House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space will play an important role in the storyline that's about to unfold. Bethesda revealed a while ago that this clan would be the central faction in the upcoming DLC, but the recent trailers have given us some more cues about the situation in Va'ruun'kai, their home planet. One of the videos showcases a young Va’ruun child attending a ceremony at the Sacred Citadel on their homeworld, the second offers insight into the DLC itself.

Before we dive headfirst into the lore associated with House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space DLC, it should be noted that they have been around since 2190. Although this faction didn't exist physically, their founding was spiritual and happened in the vastness of the cosmos in a near instant; birthing House Va'ruun as we know of it now.

House Va'ruun are not new to the lore of Starfield and have been around since the launch of the game. However, with the introduction of the Shattered Space DLC, more light will be shed on this faction, and perhaps even storyline content related to them.

But to answer the question of who are House Va'ruun, we have two words: Spiritual Isolationists. Based on the recent video, it is clear to see that the people of House Va'ruun heavily rely on spirituality, even in the face of certain annihilation. So strong is their belief that they are willing to die for it.

You could say that their government is based on Theocracy. Religious elements within the government would likely hold high positions of power and command the respect of the masses. However, since the faction was founded by one individual, ultimate power and rule were likely reserved for Jinan Va'ruun.

While House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space could play an important role as their founding occurred 190 years before the main storyline of the game. The exact date is unknown, but their founder, Jinan Va'ruun foresaw their future during one of the many gravitational jumps that were being made by their colony ship.

It would seem that Jinan Va'ruun experienced something during these many jumps; he claimed an entity called the Great Serpent made contact with it. This celestial being allegedly created the Milky Way Galaxy. Once the deed was done, it entered a deep sleep, but now was slowly awaiting. It also mentioned that it would soon reclaim its creation in an event called the Shrouding.

The Great Serpent would spare loyal disciples when the Shrouding came to devour all. They would survive this forsaken deluge and quite probably be the last trace of humanity in the Milky Way Galaxy.

With this in mind, the Great Serpent's teachings were spread by Jinan Va'ruun. Perhaps he hoped to save as many as he could before the fateful day arrived. However, things would soon take a turn for the worse.

Years before the Starfield Shattered Space DLC takes place, the faction was already settled on their homeworld called Va'ruun'kai. At a glance, the planet, while not a haven, is still much better than the colony ship that once ferried these lost souls across the cosmos till Jinan Va'ruun gave them purpose.

In the year 2230, descendants of this once-lost colony ship revealed their identity to the Settled Systems. At first, diplomatic relations flourished, but this did not last very long. Jinan Va'ruun moved away from spreading the message of the Great Serpent to declaring an all-out war on the Settled Systems.

The message of the Great Serpent had gone from that of people embracing the ideology to having it enforced upon them. The war raged from 2240 to 2063; 23 long years of bloody conflict which finally ended with Jinan Va'ruun's death. However, during that timeline, the reputation of House Va'ruun was already dragged through the dirt and irreparable damage had been done.

What happened to House Va'ruun after the Serpent Crusade?

After Jinan Va'ruun's death, his son, Jarek Va'ruun sought to make amends. He sued for peace and established an embassy in New Atlantis. However, given the sheer bloodshed that occurred, their reputation was shattered. Following the Colony Wars (2308 - 2311), House Va'ruun vanished. Failure to fix their reputation likely made them completely isolate themselves from the rest of the Galaxy.

Fast forward to House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space DLC, and it can be assumed that they went back to their spirituality. However, things have not been working out for them. Despite complete isolation, Va'ruun Zealots who managed to stay behind in the Settled System continue to damage House Va'ruun's reputation. But the worst is yet to come for House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space.

What is happening to House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space?

As seen in the video posted by Bethesda, House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space is facing a catastrophic event unlike any they have witnessed. It would appear that the Shrouding which was spoken of by the Great Serpent is beginning, but not as it was foretold. Based on the deep dive from Bethesda, a secret experiment involving gravitational drive technology went horribly wrong.

In the animated video that sheds light on the House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space, we get to see the outcome of this experience. A hole is ripped through space-time which destroys a significant portion of the Va'ruun capital Dazra.

Those trapped within this expanding sphere of energy are discorporated. Their bodies vanish and only the immaterial selves remain, but only briefly before being merged with cosmic dust.

House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space calls this the Vortex Incident.

What's interesting is that this expanding sphere of energy does not affect the non-organic matter. The Sacred Citadel on Va'ruun'kai has virtually been left untouched, with few exceptions. This would suggest that only organic matter is being targeted.

Anasko Va'ruun, leader of House Va'ruun and speaker for the Great Serpent is missing. As seen in the animated video, he was among the first to be consumed by the sphere of energy that resulted from the Vortex incident. In his absence, House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space has quite literally been shattered, as minor houses are now all vying for power and control.

House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space is in turmoil. With their leader missing, cultists and fantasists running amuck, and the space that separates their reality from another is coming undone. As the player, it will be your job to decide the fate of House Va'ruun and uncover the secrets that lie hidden beneath the surface.

That said, some elements of House Va'ruun in Starfield Shattered Space will want to help you, while others will hunt you. There will be immaterial and material threats for you to deal with and some tough decisions for you to make.
