Kratos is the demigod son of Zeus, the former King of Olympus. Kratos' family history has always been a source of contention in the God of War series, until the events of Ghost of Sparta when Kratos discovers his mother, Callisto, is still alive, and she informs him that his father is Zeus, King of Olympus.
Who is Kratos?
Kratos, a once-respected soldier and Spartan General, is the God of War series' protagonist, endowed with extraordinary herculean god-like combat skills and power. He was Ares' champion, as exemplified by the fact that he wields Ares' champions' weapons, the Blades of Chaos. However, as a result of events in the God of War series, Kratos is renowned as the God Slayer/The Slayer of Gods after exacting revenge on the Olympians and Titans.
Kratos and his brother Deimos are also revealed to be the demi-god children of Zeus, the former King of Olympus. This gives Kratos his extraordinary superhuman god-like combat skills and power, as well as his near immortality, as he is said to be over 1000 years old during God of War (2018) even though he only looks to be in his early 50s.
Who is Kratos’ father Zeus?
Zeus, the Titan King Cronos's youngest child, was the King of Olympus as well as the God of the Sky, Thunder, Lightning, and the Heavens. He was the biological father of the majority of the gods of Olympus, as well as some demigods including Kratos' brother Demios, Hercules, Apollo, and others. While he is believed to be alive in Greek Mythology, Zeus was slain by Kratos in the events of God of War 3.
He did, however, function as Kratos' ally during the events of God of War (2005), although he was the principal enemy in both God of War 2 and 3. That happened only after Zeus was infected by fear from Pandora's Box and became afraid of Kratos as he attempted to have his son killed multiple times. This was because he believed that Kratos would ultimately kill him. That eventually happened for a variety of reasons, including Kratos' rage at the Olympian Gods' refusal to remove his nightmares and to make them pay for the suffering that both his mother, Callisto, and brother, Demios endured.
Is Kratos a God?
While Kratos begins the God of War series as a demi-god, he eventually succeeds Ares as the Greek God of War at the end of God of War II (2005). In God of War 2, he loses his godly powers, but in God of War 3, he takes Hades' soul along with Hope from Pandora's box, giving him the ability to slay gods. But, towards the end of God of War 3, Kratos stabbed himself, releasing Hope into the universe, but he also reabsorbed almighty power from the Blade of Olympus.
As a result, it's debatable whether Kratos is still a god, however, many believe he has the powers of three separate gods (Ares, Hades, and Zeus). However, Kratos tells Atreus, in God of War (2018), that he is a God, which ended the debate.
