The Resident Evil series is full of eccentric characters. From the faceless Ethan Winters to the quirky Albert Wesker, Capcom strives to populate the universe with as many distinct characters as possible and few define that as much as the Merchant does. The Merchant in Resident Evil 4 is one of the series' oddest and most memorable characters which has made it a fan favorite.
Who is the Merchant in the Resident Evil 4 Remake?
Leon is sent to a small European village to save the President's daughter in Resident Evil 4. She's been kidnapped, and Leon is ready to rescue her but the iconic Resident Evil 4 hero will require support, and he receives most of his mission aid from a mysterious merchant. Leon will be able to purchase weapons, tools, upgrades, and other materials from this individual. He'll even buy things from Leon, which is nice as the protagonist doesn't have much local cash on him.
The Merchant doesn't have a name, or we don't know what it is as he is simply referred to as The Merchant. There isn't a lot of information about this man other than his name and his job, which is to sell and buy stuff. He is claimed to be a mystery Ganado character who appears only in Resident Evil 4 to allow the player to upgrade, sell, and buy firearms.
He wears a long, black coat, and a light blue flame marks the sites of his businesses. He looks to be capable of moving enormous distances in the blink of an eye. He carries a slew of weaponry in his massive backpack and outerwear.
Where can the Merchant be found in the Resident Evil 4 Remake?
Players initially encounter the Weapons Merchant behind the house in the Valley where they wake up. Leon finds the Merchant enticing him to look at his wares after a narrow escape with a Ganado. While he might not always have a shop nearby, you can always find the Merchant sporting his long black coat, carrying an enormous rucksack, and standing beside a blue torch.
The Merchant keeps all of his wares in his coat and backpack. With Pesetas, the game's currency, players can buy guns, upgrades, ammunition, vital equipment, and attache cases. They can also make money by selling their things. Besides trading, the Merchant owns a number of shooting ranges scattered throughout the rural Spanish community. Players can participate in shooting galleries to gain high scores and prizes from the Merchant himself.
What changes have been made to the Merchant in the Resident Evil 4 Remake?
Despite all of the changes made by the creators, the voice actor is the most noticeable modification to the Merchant. In the original Resident Evil 4, Paul Mercier voiced both Leon Kennedy and the Merchant, however, that has altered this time around. Nick Apostolides, who voiced Kennedy in the Resident Evil 2 remake, returns as Kennedy but there's been no confirmation as to who voices the Merchant.
The one thing that's been made obvious is that Mercier will not be returning unless Capcom shocks fans with a big surprise. But there have been new features added including one that allows Leon to trade specific cash for special equipment such as extra riches, a red dot sight, and the Punisher handgun, which is also returning from the first game. Although the Resident Evil 4 remake is expected to include significant modifications, it appears that the Merchant will simply be built upon.
The functionality of the Merchant's shop looks to be the same as in the original game, although it has been enhanced in small portions. But the main difference is how the shop is displayed to the player. The Merchant appears to be more interactive than he was during the original game. Also, he appears on-screen and has more dialogue in the remake.
