The Assassin's Creed franchise was first launched in 2007 and has been running strong ever since. The series has evolved over the years, spawning over 20 games across different platforms, comics, and even an official silver-screen adaptation. While some games in the franchise have been better than others, it can't be denied the first Assassin's Creed paved the way for the series. However, despite the original title's significance in the franchise, it is pretty hard to access it with current consoles.
Unfortunately, the game is locked to the 7th generation of consoles, which means you will need either a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360 to play Assassin's Creed. Even if you can get a hold of one, the game is severely outdated by today's standards and will not grant you the best gaming experience. This is why we believe it needs a remake.
It is not fair to the game that started it all

All the other games in the franchise from the 7th generation have been remastered for the newer consoles and are easily accessible. Although titles like the Ezio trilogy, Rogue, Black Flag, and AC 3 were originally released for the PlayStation 3, they have been remastered for the PlayStation 4, and even PS5 players can play them through backward compatibility.
These remasters have extended the life of these titles, allowing a newer generation of players to experience these games. However, the first Assassin's Creed is still stuck on the old hardware, and with the online stores for the PS3 and Xbox 360 closed, the only way to play the title is by buying a disk for the consoles. However, Assassin's Creed doesn't need just a remaster, but a full-blown remake.
Why Assassin's Creed needs a remake and not a remaster
As mentioned earlier, the 7th generation of Assassin's Creed games were remastered for the PlayStation 4, making it possible for players to run them on the PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility. While this same thing can also be done for the franchise's first entry, the game deserves more than just another remaster. Being the title that paved the way for a huge franchise for Ubisoft, the first Assassin's Creed deserves a remake.
Moreover, the game had some flaws, such as repetitive missions, clunky controls, an open world with no fun activities side content, and less-than-stellar graphics. A remaster for the new generation of consoles can upscale the graphics and increase the framerate, but it cannot change the core gameplay mechanics like a remake can. Thus, a remake is needed to overhaul the first game to meet today's standards.
What can Assassin's Creed learn from Shadows
Assassin's Creed Shadows is set to come out later this year, and fans are excited to finally see the franchise visit feudal Japan. With this game being the first next-gen exclusive in the franchise, it might teach a few things to the remake:
- Refined parkour mechanics: Shadows has shown off its new parkour mechanics through the trailer which looks good for the most part. With how clunky and slow they were in the original, the new parkour system can make traversal across buildings smoother.
- Staying next-gen: The franchise is finally saying goodbye to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, allowing Shadows to reach its full potential. The remake should follow suit and stay next-gen exclusive to reach its full potential, by using all the power of the latest hardware.
- Diverse open world: Shadows will feature a diverse open world to explore, something which was missing from the original Assasin's Creed. The remake can take inspiration and include new activities to engage with and side missions in the open world.
- A new control scheme: The latest AC games including Shadows feature a modern control scheme. The remake can work on that and focus on bringing modern controls for newer players to enjoy.
- Stealth mechanic: Shaowd features stealth and combat-focused protagonists. The remake can take this into account and work on its stealth by including crouch mechanics and silent assassinations.
Conclusion
Last year, there were rumors about Assassin's Creed Black Flag getting a remake. However, we believe that the first game deserves it instead as, unlike Black Flag, this title is still inaccessible to the newer generation of players. If Ubisoft works on the remake of the first entry in the franchise, it needs to reach the polish level of what they are going for with Asassin's Creed Shadows.
