Hogwarts Legacy, an action RPG developed by Avalanche Software, is set to release later this year, but its approaching release is causing a schism among fans old and new, who are debating whether support for the game corresponds to support for Harry Potter's creator. Since the success of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling's name has been synonymous with her transphobic attitudes, leading some admirers to abandon Rowling and her work. Additionally, veteran fans of the brand have conflicting feelings about supporting the new game.
What is Hogwarts Legacy about?
Hogwarts Legacy's plot will take us into the wizarding world in the 1800s, 100 years before the events of the Harry Potter books. It's a unique story that will immerse players in the life of a fifth-year Hogwarts student, granted late admission owing to our holding of the key to an "ancient mystery" that challenges the world of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Avalanche Software says that in Hogwarts Legacy, players will "embark on a perilous mission to understand a secret reality of the wizarding world, tour some familiar landmarks, and meet a fresh new cast of people."
Will J.K. Rowling profit from Hogwarts Legacy?
Although J.K. Rowling had nothing to do with the development of this game, the reality remains that she will earn from anything developed using her IP as long as she holds the rights to it. The exact sum has yet to be published, but considering she earns millions in passive income each year (and how pricey the base game will be), the money she'll gain from game sales won't be a drop in the bucket.
Did J.K. Rowling play a part in creating the story for Hogwarts Legacy?
Despite being based on a universe that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling created, Hogwarts Legacy will be an entirely original story. The amazing team at Portkey Games will write and tell the story. According to a FAQ, Warner Bros. Games has confirmed that she did not have a direct hand in the design of Hogwarts Legacy.
"J.K. Rowling is not directly engaged in the creation of the game, but her extraordinary body of literature serves as the cornerstone of all initiatives in the Wizarding World," WB writes in the FAQ. According to the firm, Hogwarts Legacy "is not a new story by J.K. Rowling."
"Each experience offered under Portkey Games will take place in the Wizarding World and will be faithful to it," developers Portkey Games said in a Q&A about the game. “J.K. Rowling believes in Portkey Games and has entrusted the design and creation of the games to Warner Bros. Games and the developers involved."
