Larry Hryb (also known by his nickname majornelson) has announced on Twitter that Xbox Live Members without Gold will have free access to online play from 31 January to 3 February. Although the video and Larry's Twitter status, as well as the blog post, says "Play Fortnite", you can indeed play other games as well so long as they have multiplayer.
If you do want to try Fortnite, this free trial is a nice way to test the game and how it works. Fortnite also has cross-platform play, so you can play players on the PS4, Nintendo Switch as well as PC from your Xbox One! Fortnite is free anyway, so that's probably why they are talking about it online.
You can also enjoy more games such as Rocket League, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), GTA Online, Red Dead Online, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Overwatch and more. You will need to own a copy of these games if you want to play online.

What is Xbox Live Gold?
Xbox Live Gold is a premium membership where players can get special discounts, free games as well as multiplayer access for games. The regular subscription, Xbox Live (or "Silver") only allows you to access the Microsoft Store to purchase and download games. It is similar to PS4's PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online.
The free offer is only for players who have the "Silver" subscription and want to try out. If you decided you like the subscription, you can sign up here.
