The 6v6 mode in Overwatch 2 is one of the highly sought phenomena in the Hero shooter scene. However, OW2’s game director Aaron Keller recently posted a Director’s take promising this much-awaited mode’s return in the upcoming Season 13. As a result, many netizens applauded the developer, while others still pointed out some existing in-game issues.

A popular OW streamer Samito posted a video on X praising the developer for the promise they made to the fans.

"A great honest blog from Aaron. I just wanna say thank you guys so much for fighting for a better game. This wouldn’t have happened without you guys. Y’all deserve the world, thank you."

As evident from the posts, a handful of netizens have praised Samito too for constantly posting about the broken state 5v5 in Overwatch 2.

Following the implementation of the DPS passive, Tank characters became unplayable. However, Blizzard released another broken patch during Overwatch 2 Season 11 mid-season where the Tank character became overpowered. Even having Mercy's damage boost and Baptiste’s Amplified matrix for a DPS character almost did not harm them.

Hence, several OW streamers including Samito, and Flats had put up multiple posts that sparked an outcry in the Overwatch 2 community.

However, players speculate that the announcement of 6v6 in Aaron Keller’s recent direct take is just a mere reflection of that.

One Overwatch 2 fan expressed their concern regarding the final release of 6v6 mode. Judging from past trends, Blizzard usually takes ample time to implement experimental modes. Hence, user @RealHimeeka said the company shouldn’t delay and perform it under the promised time.

Meanwhile, user @TheDarthJarJar asked a genuine question regarding the role distribution in the upcoming experimental mode. As discussed by Aaron Keller, the 6v6 mode, expected to make its way in Season 13 will witness a few changes. Players can be flexible in terms of picking ranks. However, it won’t be as flexible as the existing open queue matches.

Hence, the user is concerned whether they’ll be forced to pick a certain role even if they don’t want to, or if there will be certain criteria. Blizzard developers have yet to post any information regarding this role flexibility on different forums.

"Quick question: what’s the difference between role LOCK and role QUEUE. It feels like the same thing…. Would role queue just be “hey I wanna play tank”, you queue tank and you get put in a random team of 6 people and you’re forced to play tank, but it could be 1-3 tanks total?"

Among the stream of positive comments, several users like @Kylejohnson13, @Nyx_Vermilion, and @Staygamingmedia posted numerous drawbacks about the upcoming experimental mode of Overwatch 2. According to them, 6v6 can’t make an impact in the dismal state of balance in-game.

It's quite evident from the comments that a few users are still not satisfied with the director's take from Aaron Keller. Additionally, they pointed out that the streamers voicing discontent over the game's current state are the same ones who trashed Blizzard earlier, for ruining the gameplay with a 6v6 mode.

"content creators are by far the worst thing to happen to it cause they have the biggest mouths."

Bringing back 6v6 mode might not be enough to fix the existing issues for Overwatch 2

As discussed earlier, several OW2 have mixed reactions regarding the comeback of 6v6 as an experimental mode. While some have praised the developers as they're walking the path toward converting the game to its previous iteration, others are questioning the decision and pointing out the drawbacks of it.

If we take a look at the past, the chaotic 6v6 mode was one of the reasons people had voiced their discontent toward the game. Moreover, Blizzard devs had struggled to keep up with the balance changes earlier. As a result, several naysayers' speculations suggest that the same might happen with the upcoming experimental mode.

On the other hand, if the game goes back to its old 6v6 state, players will face a hard time adjusting to the team compositions since they're used to Overwatch 2's 5v5 conditioning. Meanwhile, it'll be interesting to see Blizzard's future steps through which they might keep the player base intact, and without any complaints.
