Jeff’s rise from comics to stardom

Jeff first appeared in West Coast Avengers in 2019, created by Kelly Thompson and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo. Originally a product of MODOK Superior's imagination, Jeff was subsequently adopted by Gwen Poole (Gwenpool) and eventually cared for by Kate Bishop, Wade Wilson, and Elsa Bloodstone.

His mischief and lovable antics did not go unnoticed: he found a devoted fan following, particularly in the digital Marvel's Infinity comic series It's Jeff! (which is also his ultimate name in Marvel Rivals), written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Gurihiru.

The series showcased Jeff's quirky adventures-from sledding on Captain America's shield with the Young Avengers to devouring the Infinity Gauntlet. It was a runaway success with three seasons and a 2024 Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication. It was Jeff's balance of humor and heart that secured his position in the Marvel pantheon, and his jump into the MCU was more or less inevitable.

Why is Jeff the Land Shark hated in Marvel Rivals?

While Jeff the Land Shark has undoubtedly caused a lot of splashing in Marvel Rivals, not everyone is as fond of him. His in-game abilities have created quite a stir, and to some, he's the character they love to hate. Jeff's Ultimate move, "It's Jeff!," brings in a whirlpool that sucks opponents in, causing frustration among those unfortunate enough to get caught in it. As he consumes enemy players, they take damage, and the longer they're trapped, the more devastating it becomes.

What really drives players mad, though, is that Jeff can spit enemies off the map — often wiping out a team in a single move. Jeff's power is useful, but it does make him a nightmare to play against on the field. This is what has made several players liken his overpowered nature to Teemo in League of Legends — cute but deadly. Some fans take this quite amusingly while others deem the character unfair and one of the factors making playing with him a toxic experience for those who are the recipients of his moves.

Despite this, Jeff’s popularity is undeniable. His strength in Marvel Rivals has made him one of the most talked-about characters, whether players love him or despise him. But with his recent success, it’s clear Jeff the Land Shark has earned his place in the Marvel universe.
