Beginner tips and tricks for Zenless Zone Zero
1) Understanding roles and elements
Before starting your journey, it is important to have an idea of the game's characters, their roles, and elements. Aside from being an action-RPG title, Zenless Zone Zero is a Gacha and a character-building game at heart. You are going to spend many weeks building one character properly, which warrants an understanding of the game's mechanics and how each character works.
Roles can be split into two categories: Specialties and Attack Types. Here is a list of all character specialties and a summarized version of each specialty:
- Attack: DPS characters that deal increased damage
- Stun: Builds up increased "Daze" on enemies to stun them
- Anomaly: Applies debuffs and weakens enemies
- Support: Buffs friendly units
- Defense: Reduces damage from enemies
The specialties will be paired with either one of three Attack Types that define a character's class:
- Slash: Sword attacker with fast attack. Strong against "Ethereal" enemies
- Strike: Heavy attacks with kicks and punches with medium attack speed. Strong against mechanics attack
- Pierce: Gun and drill attacks with fast attack speed. Strong against humanoid enemies
Lastly, there are five elements in total: Ice, Fire, Ether, Electric, and Physical. Here is a list of all the reactions that you can trigger with the elements:
- Burn: Fire + Fire
- Freeze: Ice + Ice
- Shock: Electric + Electric
- Corruption: Ether + Ether
- Assault: Physical + Physical
- Disorder: Mixing any element
Once you have all of the aspects above memorized, asses the enemies of the mission you are going to fight in, select allies accordingly, and max elements up to proc reactions.
2) Rerolling (Should you do it?)
The short answer to "Should you reroll in Zenless Zone Zero" is a big "NO." The long answer, however, is "maybe once or twice." Regardless of your gameplay style, Zenless Zone Zero will force you to use fixed characters in the prologue, which will be the case until the in-game email unlocks for the pre-registration rewards. All of it will take you approximately a little more than an hour.
Hence, while it might be slightly ideal to reroll after one or two walkthroughs, it will become tiring shortly after. Zenless Zone Zero can become repetitive as you progress further unlocking endgame activities and story missions. Its gameplay loop resembles that of Honkai Impact 3rd, where you must build characters to complete singular closed mission titlesets.
We recommend that you stick with your first account to avoid any burnout as a new player.
3) Complete side quests for stores
The neighboring stores in New Eridu are some of the most important places you can visit in Zenless Zone Zero. They provide buffs for your next combat mission or refresh Stamina daily based on the store you visit. You should always prioritize unlocking two shops in the early game: a noodle shop and a coffee shop.
4) Avoid Stamina cap
As mentioned, Zenless Zone Zero's gameplay loop relies on character-building. Hence, you must be active especially when managing your Stamina. The primary location where you can spend all your Stamina in the early game is "VR Device." Here, you can farm ascension material for your character, W-Engine, skill enhancement materials, and more.
5) Do not invest in all characters
Based on the specialties and elements mentioned above, invest in three characters for your first team. If you luck out on getting three characters from the same faction, always prioritize making a team of those specific characters for the bonus.
However, if you must create a team with characters from different factions, mix and match between Attack, Stun, Support, or Defense/Anomaly in place of Support.
6) Do not farm artifacts early game (Drive Discs)
Avoid using your Stamina for Drive Discs early in the game. Instead, build your team and characters, enhancing each skill and ascension via the VR Device. The reason for this because Drive Discs don't have any guarantee of dropping favored stats for your character.
Instead, you can use the Stamina to get ascension materials and improve your character's stats to survive in the early game.
