Bangboo is a small friend that players will befriend in the Zenless Zone Zero combat. Lore-wise, they are a medium used when a Proxy wants to communicate with other investigators inside a Hollow. However, regarding gameplay, they apply passive and active support to characters in combat, with further amplified effect if a Bangboo is matched with their factions.
In Zenless Zone Zero, Bangboos can be acquired from their separate Gacha banner. However, the Boopon currency for the Bangboo banner does not require real-life money. Instead, players can just run missions, domains, Hollow Zero, and upgrade Bangboo in the game to get the associated currency as reward drops.
How does a Bangboo work in Zenless Zone Zero?
A Bangboo can be treated as a small extension of your team build in Zenless Zone Zero. They act as a pet that will provide passive bonuses to your characters, and perform active skill for an extra bit of damage. Those who are familiar with ELFs in Honkai Impact 3rd should be able to understand this system, as they are very similar.

However, in Zenless Zone Zero, a player must tend to their Bangboos through a shop called "Remodeling Shop." Here, you can increase the level of your Bangboos, and look at all the Bangboos that you either own or do not own. To equip a Bangboo for your team, look for a small circle on the bottom-right corner of the screen to equip any Bangboo you have.
To unlock the "Remodeling Shop" and the Bangboo system, complete the introductory Hollow Zero mission, Qualification Assessment in Chapter 1-Intermission.
In the shop, you can check the rarity of each Bangboo, alongside what each of them does in terms of their active, passive, and in some cases, chain skills.
These skills can be identified by A, B, and C on the selected Bangboo's screen. Some Bangboo will have their chained attack, or C, missing from the screen. They are capable of performing an active skill only, alongside granting passive buffs.
A chain attack from a Bangboo works similarly to that of a character, where you must select the Bangboo when the switching bar appears during combat.
How to customize and upgrade a Bangboo in the Remodeling Shop of Zenless Zone Zero
The core aspect of the "Remodeling Shop" is to modify and upgrade each Bangboo. To modify, select sockets from the inventory by clicking on the "Modify" option in the bottom-left. This allows a player to slot in the sockets, or chips, within the Bangboo. The slotting feature works very much like a "Tetris" game, where you will be given 3x3 blocks to fill up using the sockets.
The "Modify" option unlocks pretty far into the game, after reaching a certain Inter-Knot level.
Depending on the socket, and the number of sockets that have been slotted in, the Bangboo will gain bonus perks, such as increased ATK, increased PEN, Anomaly Buildup, and more.
There are three kinds of sockets, each kind taking up a different number of slots. Blue sockets will take two slots, while purple will take up three slots, and lastly, yellow sockets will take up 4 slots in a 2x2 pattern. To purchase more sockets, head to the "Chip Exchange" shop, where you can purchase in exchange for Bangboo ascension materials.
To level up a Bangboo, simply click on the "double right arrow" on the Lv: section. To upgrade a Bangboo's star, you will need to acquire copies of that same Bangboo.
There are S-rank and A-rank Bangboo, some of which are handed out for free, while others can be acquired from the Bangboo Gacha banner.
