The 2024 F1 Austrian GP was a race in two halves. The first saw Max Verstappen dominate the field and hold a 7-second advantage over the competition. Then we had the second half (not really half but it is the more interesting bit) where Lando Norris chased down the reigning champion with all his might.
The race weekend witnessed a few standout moments from drivers and some underwhelming ones as well. While winner George Russell got the biggest reward, how did the other drivers fare across the weekend? Let's find out as we take a look at the driver ratings for the 2024 F1 Austrian GP.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifying and race
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car
- Mistakes made over the weekend
- Relative performance against their teammate
2024 F1 Austrian GP: Rating the drivers
Red Bull
Max Verstappen
Sprint: Started 1st, Finished 1st
GP: Started 1st, Finished 5th
Rating: 6.5
An almost perfect weekend for Max except the battle with Lando Norris. The driver moved under braking once too often to the gripe of his rival and the contact was on him.
It did give the fans something to watch out for, but for Max, a less than ideal end to a very impressive weekend.
Sergio Perez
Sprint: Started 7th, Finished 8th
GP: Started 8th, Finished 7th
Rating: 4
Whichever way you paint it, losing out to a Haas on track is just poor for Perez. The string of performances that the Mexican has had recently are arguably far worse than what even Albon and Gasly had during their Red Bull stunts and they were shown the door much earlier.
For Red Bull's sake and for the Mexican's as well, Sergio Perez needs to find form because this level of results has him heading towards danger.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Sprint: Started 6th, Finished 6th
GP: Started 5th, Finished 4th
Rating: 6.5
The slower Mercedes driver at the F1 Austrian GP, Lewis didn't have the best weekend in terms of performance. The errors were a bit too much including crossing the white line at the pitlane entry and the damage he caused to the car by running over a kerb.
When your teammate wins the race and you're not even on the podium, that's a bad weekend, and Lewis knows that quite well.
George Russell
Sprint: Started 4th, Finished 4th
GP: Started 3rd, Finished 1st
Rating: 10
A much-deserved result for George, as this was another weekend of him being the benchmark at Mercedes. He kept himself in the hunt and even if this had been a weekend where he secured only a podium, it would have still been a race where he extracted everything possible from the car.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc
Sprint: Started 10th, Finished 7th
GP: Started 6th, Finished 11th
Rating: 5
This was a bad one for Charles as he just couldn't find the groove while in the car. The Ferrari driver was quite frustrated throughout the Austrian GP as he tried to get his head around the car.
The sprint was ruined by a PU issue and then the race was ruined by contact with Oscar Piastri. The driver goes home with no points added to his tally over the weekend.
Carlos Sainz
Sprint: Started 5th, Finished 5th
GP: Started 4th, Finished 2nd
Rating: 8
A solid strong weekend from Carlos Sainz as he was once again there to pick up the pieces when Charles had a bad one. The P2 finish was unexpected, but the Spaniard will take it with both hands.
McLaren
Lando Norris
Sprint: Started 2nd, Finished 3rd
GP: Started 2nd, DNF
Rating: 8
Lando Norris was visibly frustrated by what had happened. A race he could have won saw him get a DNF. Looking back at the GP, one has to commend Lando for consistently being at it with Max. He did what was best in the car and the Max-Red Bull combination wilted in the end. The contact was not his fault and that's why he was seething after the race.
Oscar Piastri
Sprint: Started 3rd, Finished 2nd
GP: Started 7th, Finished 2nd
Rating: 8
A brilliant overall weekend for Oscar Piastri but he would be feeling slightly unhappy with the track limits penalty on Saturday. The Australian was the only one who was not too excited after the F1 Austrian GP because he knew he could've won this race. Overall, it was still a big haul of points for Oscar.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso
Sprint: Started 13th, Finished 15th
GP: Started 15th, Finished 18th
Rating: 5.5
A weekend to forget for Fernando Alonso as he tries to make sense of what is possible with Aston Martin. The car has regressed to a point that was not expected, and unfortunately, that's left the Spaniard a bit vulnerable over a race distance.
Lance Stroll
Sprint: Started 12th, Finished 10th
GP: Started 17th, Finished 13th
Rating: 6
It was a better weekend for Lance compared to his teammate but that's not saying much as Alonso had a poor run in Austria. Stroll kept it on the road for the most part and brought the car home ahead of the Spaniard.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly
Sprint: Started 9th, Finished 12th
GP: Started 13th, Finished 10th
Rating: 7.5
Gasly got home with a point under his belt in the Alpine. The French driver is now on a 3-race points scoring run as he got the better of Ocon once again albeit in a car that was lighter than his teammate's.
Esteban Ocon
Sprint: Started 8th, Finished 11th
GP: Started 10th, Finished 12th
Rating: 7
Ocon came home in 12th after suffering from damage on his car as bits flew off during the race. The F1 Austrian GP was maybe an opportunity lost when it came to scoring points, but the Frenchman also lacked the race pace of his teammate, albeit having the heavier car that impacts tire life.
Williams
Alex Albon
Sprint: Started Pitlane, Finished 17th
GP: Started 16th, Finished 15th
Rating: 6.5
Not the Alex Albon performance we've grown accustomed to, a part of it was down to just the car not being in the window. The Williams driver was outqualified by Logan for only the second time in their partnership in the sprint shootout and just didn't have what could be called a positive run in the car.
Logan Sargeant
Sprint: Started 15th, Finished 16th
GP: Started 19th, Finished 19th
Rating: 5.5
The sprint part of the F1 Austrian GP was nice for Logan, the race part was not that impressive, unfortunately, as he was last to cross the line.
V-Ca-RB
Daniel Ricciardo
Sprint: Started 16th, Finished 14th
GP: Started 11th, Finished 9th
Rating: 7.5
The sprint part of the weekend was not that good for Daniel. The race part however, was very impressive. The fact that Daniel was able to drag that car into points while his teammate couldn't should give him more confident.
It's also a message to Red Bull, as the F1 Austrian GP showed that Ricciardo is finally starting to put things together.
Yuki Tsunoda
Sprint: Started 14th, Finished 13th
GP: Started 14th, Finished 14th
Rating: 6
This was a weekend to forget for Yuki. First the comments on team radio, then the race performance, none of it had anything to write home about and was a major disappointment overall.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas
Sprint: Started 18th, Finished 18th
GP: Started 18th, Finished 16th
Rating: 6
Bottas is finding it very hard to secure a seat for 2025 and the fact that he's driving a car that gives him nothing in terms of performance is a battle that he's up against unfortunately.
WIth Zhou as a teammate, it is just too hard to figure out how good or bad Bottas is and that's hampering his overall stock on the grid.
Guanyu Zhou
Sprint: Started 19th, Finished 20th
GP: Started 20th, Finished 17th
Rating: 5
Not much to write home about from Zhou. The Chinese driver is consistently slower than his teammate and has next to no chance of securing a seat in 2025, especially with the nature of the Sauber this season.
Haas F1
Kevin Magnussen
Sprint: Started 11th, Finished 9th
GP: Started 12th, Finished 8th
Rating: 8
An excellent weekend for Kevin Magnussen overall as he was brilliant during the sprint and had strong pace in the race as well. The Danish driver was just a step behind his teammate on Sunday but overall had a nice weekend with a good haul of points.
Nico Hulkenberg
Sprint: Started 17th, Finished 19th
GP: Started 9th, Finished 6th
Rating: 9
The F1 Austrian GP is the prime example of how important Nico Hulkenberg has been to Haas. The German has done a brilliant job with the team and that P6 is going to help a lot in the championship.
Overall, the F1 Austrian GP was another weekend that showed the paddock what this driver could do when the car allows him to express himself.
