The 2024 F1 Azerbaijan GP qualifying saw Charles Leclerc put together another brilliant show. He secured his fourth consecutive pole and was in a league of his own. What was also interesting to see was how well Oscar Piastri did in Q3 after McLaren struggled in earlier qualifying sessions.
Leclerc's teammate Carlos Sainz was P3, as the Spaniard couldn't put together a lap close enough to his teammate's. With the grid for the F1 Azerbaijan GP set, where does the intra-team battle in qualifying stand within each team? Let's take a look.
2024 F1 Azerbaijan GP: Teammates qualifying battle
Red Bull
Max Verstappen 16-1 Sergio Perez
Sprint: Max Verstappen 3-0 Sergio Perez
After 33 races, Sergio Perez finally gets one over Max Verstappen. The Azerbaijan GP qualifying was not the best for Verstappen, as he probably damaged his floor on the first run.
Nevertheless, Baku has always been a Sergio Perez tracker, and he did a brilliant job for the team.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton 4-13 George Russell
Sprint: Lewis Hamilton 1-2 George Russell
Lewis Hamilton is now 4-13 against George Russell, and he was around 4-tenths of a lap slower than his teammate. This kind of one-sided form is going to concern Hamilton, especially as he moves to Ferrari next season against Charles Leclerc.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc 11-5 Carlos Sainz
Sprint: Charles Leclerc 1-2 Carlos Sainz
Charles Leclerc 1-0 Oliver Bearman
Charles Leclerc secured his fourth consecutive pole at the Azerbaijan GP. The Ferrari driver continues to deliver the goods, and after a mid-season slump, the driver is back to stamping his authority over Carlos Sainz.
McLaren
Lando Norris 14-3 Oscar Piastri
Sprint: Lando Norris 2-1 Oscar Piastri
This one goes to Oscar Piastri. It's slightly unfortunate for Lando Norris because he was on course to secure a Q2 slot before the yellow flag. The gap still continues to be huge between the two teammates over a lap.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso 12-5 Lance Stroll
Sprint: Fernando Alonso 1-2 Lance Stroll
Fernando Alonso unfortunately doesn't get the credit he deserves, as everyone raves about the performances of the frontrunners, but this one was just another example of the Spaniard putting his teammate in place and delivering when needed.
Alpine
Esteban Ocon 10-7 Pierre Gasly
Sprint: Esteban Ocon 2-1 Pierre Gasly
The gap between the two drivers is decreasing, and Pierre Gasly's qualifying was quite brilliant (even though a DSQ might be coming).
Ocon has been handicapped, even with a lack of running on the track and it showed during the Azerbaijan GP qualifying.
Williams
Alex Albon 1-1 Franco Colapinto
Sprint: Alex Albon 0-0 Franco Colapinto
We might have a new superstar in our hands, as Franco Colapinto showed up and turned heads in qualifying. He will start the race ahead of his teammate, and the score is 1-1 between the duo.
RB
Daniel Ricciardo 6-11 Yuki Tsunoda
Sprint: Daniel Ricciardo 2-1 Yuki Tsunoda
Ricciaedo got outqualified again, and it was just another case of the Australian being unable to string together any kind of meaningful momentum that could sway Red Bull into promoting him. A 6-11 scorecard surely doesn't look good for Ricciardo.
Sauber F1
Valtteri Bottas 16-1 Zhou Guanyu
Sprint: Valtteri Bottas 2-1 Zhou Guanyu
Bottas once again got the better of Zhou, and the battle is now at 16-1. While the Chinese driver might be in his last Azerbaijan GP, it's difficult to know what's next for Bottas.
Haas
Kevin Magnussen 3-13 Nico Hulkenberg
Sprint: Kevin Magnussen 2-1 Nico Hulkenberg
Ollie Bearman 1-0 Nico Hulkenberg
Another surprise for the Azerbaijan GP was how good Ollie Bearman instantly was. He outqualified Nico Hulkenberg and continues to impress before his full campaign begins next season.
