The 2024 F1 Brazilian GP was a humdinger in every way possible as we had far too many twists and turns throughout the weekend. Not only that, we had a scenario where the drivers were put in arguably the worst possible position and while some shined through, others struggled.
As Nico Hulkenberg said after the race, this was one where everyone makes mistakes, unless you're Max Verstappen. The race saw a good array of great and average drives. Who impressed and who struggled? Let's take a look at the driver rating for the F1 Brazilian GP.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifying and races is judged.
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car.
- Mistakes made over the weekend.
- Relative performance against their teammate.
2024 F1 Brazilian GP: Rating the drivers
Red Bull
Max Verstappen
Rating: 10
This was brilliance personified by Max Verstappen as the Red Bull driver has all but sealed his 4th title. This will go down as one of his best drives, as the Dutchman was in a league of his own as he made his way through the field to win this one.
Sergio Perez
Rating: 5
Another weekend to forget for Perez. The Mexican's teammate stormed through the field to win the race while he scraped home with nothing to show for it. Did fortune play a role? It probably did, but at the same time, this big gulf is the reason why Red Bull is looking at options beyond the Mexican.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Rating: 3
An F1 Brazilian GP to forget for Lewis Hamilton. At some point, one had to ask if your teammate was fighting for the win in your car, what are you doing fighting the Haas of Ollie Bearman? A horrible overall weekend for the driver as George Russell jumps him in the points standings.
George Russell
Rating: 8
George Russell would be rueing that pitstop from Mercedes because if not for that moment, he would have won the F1 Brazilian GP. The young driver is flying the Mercedes flag as high as he can with what he has under him.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc
Rating: 8
Leclerc did whatever he could in a Ferrari that was probably not the best in the wet conditions. He didn't have the foundational pace to challenge other cars, and a P5 was the maximum he could have done on Sunday.
Carlos Sainz
Rating: 4
A poor weekend follows a monumental high for Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard was nowhere throughout the F1 Brazilian GP race weekend as he came home with no points in the bag.
McLaren
Lando Norris
Rating: 6
As far as championship campaigns go, Lando Norris and McLaren are just not ready to fight for the title. In a battle like this, the team has to win small moments. The driver has to nail the start, know when to put it, and know when to do the restart. When you're not winning those tiny battles, you lose the big one. This is what has happened with Norris this season.
Oscar Piastri
Rating: 5
A rather poor Sunday to back up a more than decent Saturday for Oscar Piastri. He was rightfully upset at how poorly he'd done in the F1 Brazilian GP and the result is what we see at the moment.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso
Rating: 6
Fernando Alonso had a physically painful F1 Brazilian GP by the looks of it. The Aston Martin has gotten worse and worse by the week in 2024, and it's safe to say that Adrian Newey cannot come soon enough to Silverstone.
Lance Stroll
Rating: 5
Lance Stroll's race ended before the official start. That should tell you everything about the Canadian's race weekend.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly
Rating: 8.5
A strong race for Pierre Gasly as well as he followed his teammate home. The Alpine came alive in the wet weather, and the two drivers made the most of it.
Esteban Ocon
Rating: 10
Remember when Bruno Famin wanted to fire Esteban Ocon after the race in Monaco? This was a scintillating race for the French driver who is just seeing out his contract at Alpine right now and has given the team a mega gift in terms of championship points.
Williams
Alex Albon
Rating: 5
Well, it could have been so much more for Alex but he ended up crashing out in qualifying. The F1 Brazilian GP is sadly going to be a story of what could have been for the Thai driver.
Franco Colapinto
Rating: 6
A learning experience for the Argentinian and probably a weekend where the hype slows down a little. Two big crashes are certainly not what Franco would have hoped for from his first weekend.
V-Ca-RB
Liam Lawson
Rating: 7.5
A decent F1 Brazilian GP for Liam. Yuki Tsunoda beat him to the line and he might not have liked it. However, finishing ahead of Sergio Perez is something that he would take home as a positive after the F1 Brazilian GP.
Yuki Tsunoda
Rating: 8
A strong weekend for Yuki. The F1 Brazilian GP could have been the one where he scored his first podium if the safety car had not been brought out. Regardless, a strong showing from the driver in tough conditions.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas
Rating: 7
Bottas did whatever he could in a car that was the slowest in the F1 Brazilian GP. The Finnish driver's seat seems to be more or less gone, as we can hardly argue if there's anything better the driver could have done in that Sauber.
Guanyu Zhou
Rating: 5
Another disappointing one from Zhou. The Chinese driver has three more races in F1 before he moves on to racing in other categories.
Haas F1
Ollie Bearman
Rating: 5
A weekend of learning for Ollie Bearman by the looks of it. The British driver made a lot of mistakes throughout the F1 Brazilian GP in conditions that were very tough for a rookie. A great learning experience overall for the British driver, though, who got his third run in the car this season.
Nico Hulkenberg
Rating: 6
A surprisingly off-beat F1 Brazilian GP for Nico Hulkenberg where he made far too many mistakes all race weekend. The German has often been very impressive around the track, but this time around nothing seemed to work for him.
