The 2024 F1 British GP was a race run in typical English weather. It was dry for some time, then we had a small shower, which was followed by a bigger shower, and finally sunshine. The race weekend from the beginning to the end was an amalgamation of different types of challenges, and the driver/team combination that came out on top worked everything to perfection.
This weekend, it was Lewis Hamilton's turn to savor the evening sun with fans. The driver won his first race after 945 days, and he did it brilliantly, to say the least. He was, however, not the only one who had a brilliant race, as there were quite a few impressive performances up and down the grid. How did each of the drivers fare at the F1 British GP? Let's find out in our driver ratings.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifying and races is judged
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car
- Mistakes made over the weekend
- Relative performance against their teammate
2024 F1 British GP: Rating the drivers
Red Bull
Max Verstappen (Started: 4th, Finished: 2nd)
Rating: 9
Max Verstappen extracted the best that he could have from the car under him. The Red Bull was just not as fast as McLaren or Mercedes on this track, but the Dutch driver almost won the race with it. Why only 9 then? We can't ignore the fact that he damaged his floor in qualifying and compromised his grid position because of that.
Sergio Perez (Started: Pits, Finished: 17th)
Rating: 3
Sergio Perez is not helping himself with these performances and he's not helped himself with the results. The F1 British GP was a stark reminder for Red Bull that Perez is just not worth that seat anymore.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton (Started: 2nd, Finished: DNF)
Rating: 9.5
This was Lewis Hamilton of old that many doubted even existed anymore. Well, he did. This was a brilliant overall performance and a feel-good moment for the driver. He didn't get outqualified by his teammate once again, hence the not-perfect score.
George Russell (Started: 1st, Finished: DNF)
Rating: 8
Another race weekend of 'what could have been' for George Russell. The Mercedes driver's PU caused immediate retirement, and from a point where he was challenging for the win to the point where he just had to park the car, it must have been painful. He still showed how good he can be, and it's still a positive weekend from the driver.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc (Started: 11th, Finished: 14th)
Rating: 5
This was a Charles Leclerc weekend from the Mattia Binotto era where every step of the F1 British GP race weekend made no sense. Leclerc looked dejected and hopeless after the race, and one cannot blame him either.
Carlos Sainz (Started: 6th, Finished: 5th)
Rating: 8.5
Carlos Sainz had a smoother weekend compared to his teammate and that's something he would pride himself on. While Leclerc became the Guinea Pig of Ferrari at the F1 British GP, Sainz drove the car to P5, the best he could have achieved.
McLaren
Lando Norris (Started: 3rd, Finished: 3rd)
Rating: 9
Another race win was lost for Lando Norris but one cannot blame the driver for this one in any way. He did whatever was possible in the car, but if not for the strategic debacle from McLaren, he would have been the victor at the F1 British GP.
Oscar Piastri (Started: 5th, Finished: 4th)
Rating: 8.5
Oscar Piastri possibly lost a race win at the F1 British GP thanks to the tire strategy. The Australian showed pace in all facets of the race and was let down by the team.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso (Started: 10th, Finished: 8th)
Rating: 6.5
Another race weekend where Fernando Alonso finished behind Lance Stroll in the race. Either Alonso has found it hard to gather an understanding of the upgraded Aston Martin or his head has dropped. Either way, it's not a good look to lose against Lance Stroll.
Lance Stroll (Started: 8th, Finished: 7th)
Rating: 7.5
A strong weekend for the Canadian. Beating Fernando Alonso and getting the better of him all weekend is a rare thing. He should be applauded for putting together these weekends as the F1 paddock grapples to find out what's going on with Alonso.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly (Started: 19th, Finished: DNS)
Rating: N/A
Another driver with a complete write-off this weekend. The F1 British GP ended before it began for Pierre Gasly.
Esteban Ocon (Started: 18th, Finished: 16th)
Rating: 5
A total write-off weekend for Ocon. First, the miscommunication in qualifying cost him a grid slot. Then the soft tire start was a poor choice, made worse by the subsequent switch to intermediates. Ocon had no opportunity to do anything this weekend, and it showed ultimately.
Williams
Alex Albon (Started: 9th, Finished: 9th)
Rating: 8.5
Alex Albon had a fruitful run at Silverstone, as he got a top-10 result. Williams worked well around the track, and Albon made the most of it.
Logan Sargeant (Started: 12th, Finished: 11th)
Rating: 7.5
Possibly one of Logan Sargeant's best F1 weekends. He shadowed Alex Albon all weekend and even in the F1 British GP. The American will be hoping to build on this as his seat continues to be in danger.
V-Ca-RB
Daniel Ricciardo (Started: 13th, Finished: 15th)
Rating: 6
A poor overall F1 British GP for Daniel Ricciardo on a weekend where he was rumored to be in contention to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull. Getting completely outperformed by Yuki Tsunoda is not ideal regardless but to do that on this weekend was even worse.
Yuki Tsunoda (Started: 13th, Finished: 10th)
Rating: 8
One has to wonder, why not Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull? The Japanese driver gave the team another reason, as he outperformed his teammate yet again and scored a point for RB.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas (Started: 16th, Finished: 14th)
Rating: 5
Another weekend where Bottas was anonymous in the Sauber. If Audi has no option left, Valtteri would keep his place but on his part, he's not done anything to get that seat, nor has he been helped by the team with an underwhelming machinery.
Guanyu Zhou (Started: 14th, Finished: 18th)
Rating: 4
It's the same anonymity that Bottas suffers with which plagues Zhou. What's worse is that he's quite clearly slower than the Finn. The F1 British GP was just another race where the Chinese driver couldn't show any reason why he should be kept beyond this season.
Haas F1
Kevin Magnussen (Started: 17th, Finished: 12th)
Rating: 6.5
Kevin Magnussen was a step behind Nico Hulkenberg in general. He did have a decent race on Sunday, though, as he made his way through the field and narrowly missed out on points.
Nico Hulkenberg (Started: 6th, Finished: 6th)
Rating: 10
Arguably the driver of the F1 British GP. Nico Hulkenberg secured a P6 finish in the Haas and did that by extracting everything possible from the car. The driver might almost feel a bit unfortunate that he signed a deal with Audi, as Red Bull could have maybe given him a shot if he were still available.
