Day 1 of the 2024 F1 British GP is already done and we have McLaren laying down the gauntlet for everyone else to catch up. The last three races in Austria, Barcelona and Canada have seen three different drivers on pole positions. We've had Max Verstappen on pole in Red Bull's home race, Lando Norris on pole in Barcelona and George Russell on pole in Montreal.
Could this also be a race where he get another different driver for pole position? Could it Oscar Piastri? Could it be Sergio Perez? Or Could it be Lewis Hamilton? Let's find out as we take a look at the predictions for the F1 British GP qualifying.
#1 Lando Norris secures pole position for the 2024 F1 British GP
It's his home race and Lando Norris seems to be up for it. The driver was brilliant last season as well when he secured a front-row start for McLaren. That race was the start of the team's rise to the front of the grid.
Almost a year later, we're looking at a team and a driver ready to perform at their home race. We're backing Lando Norris to beat Max Verstappen and secure pole position in a very close fight.
#2 Sergio Perez doesn't make it to top 5
Sergio Perez had an impressive FP2, as he finished 3rd. There was one caveat, however, as he did his lap much later than the other drivers. Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes are going to be very close in terms of laptime during the F1 British GP qualifying. As such, expect Perez to struggle to make it to the top 5.
#3 No Aston Martin in the Top 10
Aston Martin's FP1 form was a false dawn by the looks of it, as it appeared that the car had no pace whatsoever to truly challenge for a top 10 slot. The team has struggled way too much in the fast-speed sections and it becomes even more evident when Alonso or Stroll put together fastest sector times in the tight and twisty first section.
Aston Martin was prepared for a painful F1 British GP and qualifying is going to be no different. We don't expect either of the drivers to finish inside top 10.
#4 Rain could cause complete jeopardy
Rain, arguably the biggest equalizer or miscreant this weekend with its forecast of occasional disruptions, could significantly shake up the pecking order at the front of the grid
Ferrari would struggle, just like it often does when it rains; Mercedes could make another step, just like it did in Canada and even in China. Overall, if the F1 British GP qualifying sees an intervention from rain, things will not be as straightforward as they seem at the moment.
#5 Haas and Alpine will have cars in Top 10
Beyond the usual top four teams, Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas and Esteban Ocon in the Alpine are likely to challenge for the top 10. The German driver has been brilliant over a lap and seems to have the pace for the F1 British GP. Meanwhile, the French driver will be the only representative for the team as Pierre Gasly will start at the back.
Both drivers have the potential to cause some upsets and potentially break into the top 10.
