2024 F1 British GP Qualifying: Winners and Losers

F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain - Qualifying

The 2024 F1 British GP qualifying saw George Russell secure pole position from teammate Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris to make it an all-British top-3. The Mercedes driver laid down the gauntlet on the first run in Q3 and solidified it in his final run, where he went almost two-tenths quicker than anybody else.

In P4, Red Bull's Max Verstappen dragged his damaged car to the best possible result. The session evolved between wet and dry, and eventually, when the chequered flag fell for the final time, it was Russel who took pole.

So after an action-packed qualifying session, who would be happy with how everything went, and who would be a bit disappointed? Let's take a look:

2024 F1 British GP Qualifying

Winner

George Russell and Mercedes

If after this performance, anyone still doubts George Russell, it's on them. The Mercedes driver has well and truly taken over at the team and is the lead driver at the moment. The way he rose above everyone in qualifying should be enough proof for Toto Wolff that it's time he invested more in Russell.

Russell can and deserves to be the leader at Mercedes, and the British GP provided further proof of that.

Loser

Sergio Perez

The British GP race weekend began with reports that Sergio Perez was in danger of losing his seat at Red Bull. The first part of qualifying saw the Mexican beach his car in the gravel and will start the race at the back of the grid on Sunday.

Perez is not doing himself any favors at the moment, and if a contract extension cannot alleviate the pressure, nothing will.

Winner

Nico Hulkenberg

One almost has to feel bad for Nico Hulkenberg at this stage because what he's doing in that Haas shows that he would do a good job in that Red Bull. Unfortunately for the German, his fate is sealed, as he's going to the Sauber/Audi project that has looked underwhelming at best.

The British GP qualifying saw Hulkenberg outqualify both Ferraris and a Red Bull. He's a truly valuable driver who would be a great asset for Audi.

Loser

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen did everything he could but could only muster P4. The major reason behind it was the Red Bull driver fighting an uphill battle. He damaged the car in Q1 and from there, it was just damage limitation.

The surprising part in all of this is the fact that Verstappen is often known as this tenacious phenom who never makes mistakes. The mistake in the British GP has unfortunately cost him a pole position or a better grid start.

Winner

British fans

Unless it has not been already said, the top-3 of George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris are the all-British lineup. For fans who have graced the stands in the British GP, it's possibly the best thing that could have happened to them.

Having three drivers from the country rise to the top in a field where driving talent made the difference is very impressive and is going to make fans happy.

Loser

Charles Leclerc

Since the high of the win in Monaco, it appears that nothing has gone Charles Leclerc's way.

The British GP was no different, and this time around it was a result of the driver having his hands on a completely different car in all practice before moving to the older spec without upgrades for qualifying.

Leclerc was never comfortable in the car, and when that happens, we see results like the one we had in qualifying.
