The 2024 F1 British GP saw Lewis Hamilton win for the ninth time. The Mercedes driver ended a win drought stretching over 900 days in what was a feel-good moment for everyone. In P2 was Max Verstappen, taking advantage of the hard tyres, while Lando Norris finished P3.
The race featured changing conditions, with a dry start followed by a short spell of shower and subsequently a large spell of shower, which left the drivers rushing to the pits for intermediates.
Eventually, Hamilton acknowledged the British crowd following a record ninth win and capping off his last British GP race with Mercedes. As the weekend comes to an end, who is happy with how the race went and who's upset? Let's find out.
2024 F1 British GP
Winner
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes
That's two wins in two races for Mercedes, while Hamilton got his first win in the ground effect era. This race meant a lot to many, and that was quite evident when you look at their reactions. Nevertheless, it was also a return to form for the team in an emphatic fashion.
A front-row lockout followed by a win, and the last 3-4 races have been a reminder for everyone who had ruled out Mercedes and its ability to be a frontrunner again.
Loser
Lando Norris and McLaren
It might be a damning indictment on Lando Norris and McLaren, but it appears that the team is not ready to win yet.
The good part of it all is that McLaren still have a car that can win; the bad part is that the team's operational side, and to an extent, the drivers as well, are not as experienced, which was evident at the British GP.
For Lando Norris, it will be a bitter pill to swallow, but if he keeps at it again and again, he's going to improve, and that holds true for McLaren as well. It was a learning experience for the pair at the British GP, one which the team would hope to gain from.
Winner
Max Verstappen and Red Bull
There were two sides to the British GP for Red Bull and Max Verstappen. The good side was that the team overachieved and got a result that was not considered feasible at one stage. But they were able to do so because of their impressive driver and operational management.
Now, the bad side is that Red Bull didn't have a hope of competing either with Mercedes or McLaren at the British GP. While the team will go home happy with the points, there are a few things they need to work on.
Loser
Charles Leclerc and Ferrari
Charles Leclerc looked exhausted and dejected after the race, while he almost appeared to have a sense of deja vu where he has been through this before.
Unfortunately, he has been, the 2022 season, where everything just imploded mid-season, was eerily similar to this, where one high was followed by such a miserable run that the entire season fell by the wayside.
Ferrari at the British GP and in the last few race weekends have looked like the Scuderia of the past, and that's almost haunting for Leclerc, who has been through that before.
Winner
Nico Hulkenberg and Haas
Nico Hulkenberg has dragged Haas right next to RB in the championship, and the fact that he did so on a track with fast-speed sections is a testament to what the car is capable of as well.
The German's P6 at the British GP is also a sign that the upgrades have worked, and when that happens, we're looking at a step in the right direction for the American team.
Loser
Sergio Perez
Pre-British GP, there were reports of Red Bull had given Sergio Perez the ultimatum that he had to improve or else lose his seat.
The Mexican has done himself no favours with the kind of weekend he had, as it was another case of Verstappen being left alone at the front while his teammate had an underwhelming race.
Amidst all that, Perez is perilously close to dropping to P8 in the championship, with both Mercedes drivers now within striking distance. It's getting tougher for the Mexican, and he's not showing any improvement whatsoever to change his fortunes.
