The 2024 F1 season is now in its last quarter. We have done 18 races and are left with just 6. The race in Singapore this past weekend was won by Lando Norris, who dominated the field in his McLaren. The season has seen quite a few drivers step up while there have been a few surprises as well.
In this feature, we will take a look at the 'pound for pound' rankings of how each driver will fare if we take the cars out of the equation and look at the performances. To do that, we take the average of the driver ratings for every race and then arrange the pecking order accordingly.
With that being said, how do the drivers stack up? Let's take a look.
F1 Drivers 'Pound for Pound' Ranking (After Singapore GP 2024)
#20 Guanyu Zhou (Avg rating: 5.33)
Zhou is in his last F1 season right now and it's safe to say that his performances do not warrant another year in the sport.
#19 Lance Stroll (Avg rating: 5.69)
There was a moment in the middle of the season when Lance Stroll was able to match teammate Fernando Alonso consistently. That moment has passed and Aston Martin might want to look at how Stroll fits in the bigger scheme of things.
#18 Sergio Perez (Avg rating: 5.83)
It does appear that the race in Baku was more a blip than anything else. The F1 Singapore GP saw Sergio Perez back to where he was before the slight upturn in form. Red Bull has to seriously sit down and look at the options for 2025.
#17 Valtteri Bottas (Avg rating: 5.97)
The problem for Bottas has been that his F1 benchmark and the only source of comparison is Zhou who is himself not rated as highly. The latest reports do appear to be good for the Finnish driver and maybe we might see him in F1 2025 as well.
#16 Kevin Magnussen (Avg rating: 6.06)
Kevin Magnussen is on his way out of F1 right now. The driver has been unable to keep up with what Nico Hulkenberg has been doing in the car and that has hurt his prospects.
#15 Daniel Ricciardo (Avg rating: 6.22)
If Daniel Ricciardo does end up leaving F1, he'd be leaving the sport after maybe not performing at the level he would have ideally wanted to.
#14 Pierre Gasly (Avg rating: 6.76)
Pierre Gasly has been there and thereabouts this season. He's quite comfortably losing to Esteban Ocon in the head-to-head, though he would not be happy with that bit.
#13 Yuki Tsunoda (Avg rating: 6.78)
Yuki Tsunoda's form has dipped as the season has progressed. The driver's F1 future seems settled with Red Bull but he would have hoped to do better this season.
#12 Lewis Hamilton (Avg rating: 6.94)
Lewis Hamilton is one driver who has not had a good run after the summer break. The driver shockingly finds himself in P12 with only 6 races left.
#11 Alex Albon (Avg rating: 6.94)
Alex Albon currently finds himself in P11 in the pecking order. The Williams F1 driver has flirted with the top 10 all season and is right at the precipice of it.
#10 Esteban Ocon (Avg rating: 7.11)
Esteban Ocon started the 2024 season stunningly but as it has progressed, there have been a few races where he's just been missing. As a result, he finds himself slipping and is in P10 right now.
#9 Fernando Alonso (Avg rating: 7.14)
Fernando Alonso is currently P9 in the rankings. The Spaniard seems to be rejuvenated after the Adrian Newey news and seems to be putting in some strong results as well.
#8 Franco Colapinto (Avg rating: 7.17)
Franco Colapinto makes his debut in the list at P8. The Argentinian is a brilliant addition to the F1 grid and will be hoping to continue to show everyone how good he can be.
#7 Carlos Sainz (Avg rating: 7.35)
After an amazing start to the season, Carlos Sainz has fallen back a little and it has seemingly coincided with Charles Leclerc finding his feet in Ferrari as well. He still continues to be a top 7 driver which is brilliant for anyone in F1.
#6 Oscar Piastri (Avg rating: 7.44)
Oscar Piastri has climbed the ratings here and he continues to show improvement. The F1 Singapore GP was a blip for sure but the driver would be hoping to make amends on that front.
#5 Nico Hulkenberg (Avg rating: 7.58)
Nico Hulkenberg has had a stunning season and the fact that he finds himself this high up the order is a testament to that. Maybe Red Bull should have opted for the German instead of Sergio Perez.
#4 George Russell (Avg rating: 7.61)
George Russell finds himself in P4 right now and has rightly been one of the best drivers on the grid this season. There are still a few minor mistakes that he makes but he seems to be getting a hang of being on it at every race now.
#3 Charles Leclerc (Avg rating: 8.14)
Charles Leclerc is currently P3 in the standings. The driver has been brilliant of late and could have been ranked even higher if not for the mid-season blip.
#2 Lando Norris (Avg rating: 8.31)
Lando Norris, just like the championship standings, finds himself in P2. The McLaren driver has been quite good this season when it comes to maintaining at least that median level of performance where he's not having bad weekends in terms of performance.
#1 Max Verstappen (Avg rating: 8.36)
Max Verstappen continues to be the best in F1. The gap between him and Lando Norris is maybe not as big as it might seem but the Dutch driver continues to nail it every time.
