The 2024 F1 Hungarian GP saw Oscar Piastri notch up his first career win. He was followed home by teammate Lando Norris, who was close to not following team orders and keeping the win for himself.
In P3, Lewis Hamilton returned to the podium at one of his favorite races on the calendar after a brilliant overall weekend.
The race weekend from start to the finish had quite a few distinct storylines. This feature, though, is not for that. It's all about the drivers and how they fared at the Hungarian GP. So without further ado, let's take a look.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifying and races is judged
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car
- Mistakes made over the weekend
- Relative performance against their teammate
2024 F1 Hungarian GP: Rating the drivers
Red Bull
Max Verstappen
Rating: 6
The driver looked angry and fidgety from the moment he missed out on pole position on Saturday. From that point, nothing was good enough for Max Verstappen as he shouted on the team radio throughout the race.
The contact was at best a racing incident, but the fact he missed out on pulling a move when he had Hamilton covered earlier was on him. It was a weekend to forget and one where he might need to realign his expectations for the rest of the season.
Sergio Perez
Rating: 5
It might be the last Hungarian GP Perez does as a Red Bull driver. His performance on Sunday was a salvage job, and he did it well, but none of it is acceptable if you're a Red Bull driver,
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Rating: 9.5
It was arguably a perfect weekend, with the exception of him losing half a point for not qualifying as well as he could have. This was a brilliant weekend for Hamilton, as he got another well-deserved podium.
George Russell
Rating: 6
The poor qualifying left him hanging more or less, but Russell also had a role to play in it. He should have had the performance to escape Q1, but he couldn't, and that's on him. The race was a salvage job only, nothing more than that.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc
Rating: 8
Away from the eye of the media, Charles Leclerc lost a potential podium at the Hungarian GP, and it was a result of Ferrari inexplicably pitting him when he had a seven-lap tire advantage over Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
A P4 looks good in the end, but a podium was on the table at the Hungarian GP, and Ferrari messed it up.
Carlos Sainz
Rating: 7
Carlos Sainz had another decent outing, where he was back to being just a step behind his teammate throughout the race. Overall, it was a decent result for the driver.
McLaren
Lando Norris
Rating: 8
Lando Norris made only one real mistake throughout the Hungarian GP race weekend, but it cost him the win. The mistake was at the start of the race where he ceded position to his teammate.
Norris needs to sort his starts out at this stage because they've cost him two wins now.
Oscar Piastri
Rating: 9
That win maybe doesn't taste as sweet as it ideally should due to the shenanigans, but that's McLaren for you. That's a maiden win for Oscar Piastri, and he's only going to get better from this point. The Australian is slowly but steadily getting better, and that's great news for McLaren.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso
Rating: 6.5
Fernando Alonso is not in a good place mentally for the last few races, and it was obvious during the Hungarian GP as well. If Adrian Newey is joining Aston Martin, that news will come soon because that might be the only thing that brings a smile to the Spaniard's face.
Lance Stroll
Rating: 8
Ignoring the team order to cede position to Fernando Alonso is not something the Spaniard would have appreciated. Stroll on his own, though, had a brilliant race and was the quicker Aston Martin car at the Hungarian GP.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly
Rating: 6
Pierre Gasly had a somewhat similar Hungarian GP, with the only exception being that he didn't even last the entire race.
Esteban Ocon
Rating: 6
A non-starter of sorts weekend for Ocon, as the team's poor decision in qualifying knocked both Alpinws out. The race was very limited as well, as the French driver was stuck in traffic and couldn't do anything at all to make up places.
Williams
Alex Albon
Rating: 7
Alex Albon did what he could with the car, but as he pointed out, there was a level of indecisiveness in the strategy that cost him and the team.
Logan Sargeant
Rating: 6
Logan Sargeant was just a step behind Alex Albon in general. The American has certainly made a step and is much closer to Albon than he used to be.
V-Ca-RB
Daniel Ricciardo
Rating: 7
Daniel Ricciardo was pissed off at the strategy that he was given. The early pit stop left him in traffic and cost him a ton of time. The Hungarian GP was the race where the Australian made an impact but was somewhat thwarted by his team.
Yuki Tsunoda
Rating: 7.5
A strong first stint set up the race for Tsunoda, as the Japanese driver was able to put together a very impressive race. Points for RB and a leg up over Ricciardo was an overall positive day's work for the Japanese driver.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas
Rating: 6.5
A decent qualifying followed by a race where Bottas was thwarted to an extent by the strategy. The Finnish driver could have done a better job, but that's what happens in midfield, where if you don't nail everything, you can get stuck.
Guanyu Zhou
Rating: 5
Zhou Guanyu was just not even in the same league as his teammate, as the track where he's often done well, he struggled to make any impact.
Haas F1
Kevin Magnussen
Rating: 5
Kevin Magnussen was once again a step behind his teammate. The Danish driver just couldn't deliver the lap in qualifying, and after that, everything just followed.
Nico Hulkenberg
Rating: 6.5
After the highs of the previous two races, the Hungarian GP didn't go as planned for Nico Hulkenberg, as he messed up the start. Because of the start, the German was forced into a two-stopper that was probably not the best idea, and hence he ended up a few places away from points.
