The Monaco GP is one of the most prestigious races in the motorsport universe. It is part of the Triple Crown of motorsport, along with 24 Hours of Le Mans and Indy500. The race is famous for its circuit and spectacle.
The Monaco track is one of the tightest in the F1 calendar and can easily punish drivers for the slightest of mistakes. Moreover, it is one of the most difficult tracks to overtake, making the qualifying session even more important. Despite the difficulty, some F1 drivers have mastered the Monaco GP and dominated the race weekend.
Here is a list of drivers who were most successful at Monaco GP.
List of 5 F1 drivers who were most successful at Monaco GP
#5 Stirling Moss - three race wins and three pole positions
Stirling Moss was one of the first F1 drivers to master the Monaco track. When the sport was still young, Moss raced for Maserati in 1956 and won his very first Monaco GP.
The Brit took the lead early and stayed ahead for the rest of the race. Moss won the second time in Monaco in 1960 when he drove for Team Lotus and brought home their first F1 World Championship pole position and race win. The third and final time Stirling Moss won at Monte Carlo was in 1961, beating all three Ferrari cars that were running with a comparatively stronger engine.
It is worth mentioning that Stirling Moss is the only driver on this list who never won a world championship.
#4 Alain Prost - four race wins and four pole positions
Alain Prost is the next driver who performed extremely well at the Monaco GP whenever he raced there. The Frenchman won four races in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987. In most of these races, Prost battled with his old rival, Ayrton Senna for the race win.
In 1984, Prost raced against Senna for the lead. Though Senna took the lead briefly, a red flag was thrown and the race continued in the order from a lap before, giving Prost the lead. In 1985, Senna was in pole position but had an engine failure, allowing Prost to take the lead and win the race. In 1986, Prost won the race from pole position and had no major challenge from Senna, who finished third.
Alain Prost's last win at Monaco came in 1988. Senna was on the pole and was comfortably leading the race. However, he crashed in the latter stages which allowed second-placed Prost to take the lead and win the race.
Prost was also a master at bagging pole positions around the track. He took pole in 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1993.
#3 Michael Schumacher - five race wins and three pole positions
Michael Schumacher is the third most successful F1 driver at Monaco GP. The German driver is considered one of the best racers in the history of the sport. In his glittering career, he won five races at the principality and bagged three pole positions. His first two race wins came in 1994 and 1995, during which he clinched his first and second world championships with Benetton.
In 1996, he joined Ferrari and won three races at Monaco in 1997, 1999, and 2001. Surprisingly, during his dominant era with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004, Schumacher only won once at Monaco.
#2 Graham Hill - five race wins and two pole positions
Graham Hill was one of the very best drivers when it came to dominating Monaco GPs. The Brit won five races and two pole positions in his time. He was the first driver to be nicknamed King of Monaco or Mr. Monaco. Hill won the Monaco GP in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, and 1969, dominating the circuit in the 60s decade.
The race wins and pole tally clearly shows that Hill had to make his way to the top step rather than just leading the race from the pole. In 1963 and 1964, Jim Clark took the pole position in the race but was eventually won by Graham Hill. In 1969, it was Jackie Stewart who started the race from the pole while Hill was in fourth.
His record of five race wins at Monaco stood for 24 years, after which a new driver arrived in F1 and broke that record.
#1 Ayrton Senna - six race wins and five pole positions
Ayrton Senna currently holds the record for most wins at Monaco GP. The Brazilian has won six and took pole in five Grand Prix in the principality. After he broke Graham Hill's record, he was crowned by many as the new King of Monaco. Senna won in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993.
In the late 80s, he had an intense rivalry with Alain Prost and frequently raced against him at Monaco. Senna also raced against Nigel Mansell, who took pole positions in two races that the Brazilian eventually won.
Out of six races, he won three of them from pole position, while he had to chase down drivers in the other three. The other two pole positions that he took at Monaco were in 1985 and 1988, both of which were won by his old rival, Alain Prost.
