Max Verstappen won the 2024 F1 Spanish GP to make it 3 wins out of the last four races. The Dutch driver has faced excessive pressure since McLaren introduced the Miami upgrade. But that hasn't deterred him from putting together one relentless performance after another.
The F1 Spanish GP was another such case. Max Verstappen however, was not the only one. As things have started to heat up at the front of the grid, drivers are beginning to raise their game.
There were quite a few impressive performances from drivers during the F1 Spanish GP race weekend, and there were some who would have been disappointed. How did every driver fare during the weekend? Let's take a look.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifier and race
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car
- Mistakes made over the weekend
- Relative performance against their teammate
2024 F1 Spanish GP: Driver Ratings
Red Bull
Max Verstappen (Started: 2nd, Finished: 1st)
Rating: 9.5
Except for losing out on pole position to Lando Norris, Max Verstappen was just brilliant at the F1 Spanish GP. What he's doing right now is showing everyone why so many consider him the best driver in the last couple of years.
Sergio Perez (Started: 11th, Finished: 8th)
Rating: 5.5
Sergio Perez's performance at F1 Spanish GP doesn't warrant a place at Red Bull. The Mexican has been poor recently, and Barcelona was not much different.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton (Started: 3rd, Finished: 3rd)
Rating: 8.5
It's nice to see that smile back, and it's nice to see that belief back. Lewis looked confident as he outqualified George for the second time this season. A well-deserved podium where he was possibly a tad lucky with how it went.
George Russell (Started: 4th, Finished: 4th)
Rating: 8.5
While Lewis was a tad lucky, George was a tad unlucky. The hard tires ruined a possible podium, but it still is a strong result. That start was certainly sensational.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc (Started: 5th, Finished: 5th)
Rating: 8
Charles Leclerc was breathing fire after the F1 Spanish GP against his teammate Carlos Sainz. He was marginally the quicker driver in Barcelona and arguably lost one position due to strategy.
Carlos Sainz (Started: 6th, Finished: 6th)
Rating: 7.5
The back and forth with Charles Leclerc aside, this was a decent race again from Carlos. He was possibly a tenth or so behind his teammate, and that's still healthy for a teammate right now.
McLaren
Lando Norris (Started: 1st, Finished: 2nd)
Rating: 8
Lando lost the race win at the start. He lost the position to both Max Verstappen and George Russell, and that was it. The lap on Saturday was sensational, but if you're losing race wins in the fastest cars, your ratings will take a hit.
Oscar Piastri (Started: 9th, Finished: 7th)
Rating: 6
The positive for Oscar Piastri was his race pace, which was breathtaking at the very least. His qualifying was poor, and that eventually hurt his final result and overall rating.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso (Started: 10th, Finished: 12th)
Rating: 6.5
A scruffy race for Fernando Alonso where he made a few mistakes. However, finishing ahead of Lance was a decent result.
Lance Stroll (Started: 14th, Finished: 14th)
Rating: 6
Just behind Alonso throughout the F1 Spanish GP is a decent result for the Canadian. Especially considering his form has been inconsistent in general.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly (Started: 7th, Finished: 9th)
Rating: 8
A second consecutive P9 for Gasly at the F1 Spanish GP. He's making the most of his tools at Alpine, and the decision to stay just might prove right.
Esteban Ocon (Started: 8th, Finished: 10th)
Rating: 7
Battling a car that was 3kg heavier and a floor that was damaged, Ocon brought the car home in P10. It doesn't look good compared to his teammate, but the French driver had a few mitigating issues to tackle with.
Williams
Alex Albon (Started: Pitlane, Finished: 18th)
Rating: 7
Hard to stand out for Albon in Barcelona as the car was just not there. A forgettable one for the Thai driver.
Logan Sargeant (Started: 19th, Finished: 20th)
Rating: 6
Business as usual for Logan as he trailed Albon home. No light at the end of the tunnel for the American driver by the looks of it.
V-Ca-RB
Daniel Ricciardo (Started: 18th, Finished: 15th)
Rating: 6.5
Struggling with set-up issues all weekend meant that Daniel couldn't do much. The Australian, however, did make decent progress during the race, especially since his teammate finished further behind.
Yuki Tsunoda (Started: 17th, Finished: 19th)
Rating: 6
Not the best weekend for Yuki in not the best car. The Japanese driver will be looking to bounce back in Austria.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas (Started: 12th, Finished: 16th)
Rating: 5.5
Strong qualifying was ruined by a bad start once again for Bottas. Finishing behind Zhou was not the best advertisement for him.
Guanyu Zhou (Started: 15th, Finished: 13th)
Rating: 6
Zhou did whatever he could in the Sauber but the qualifying result hurt him. The Chinese driver would be happy, however, to finish ahead of Bottas at the F1 Spanish GP.
Haas F1
Kevin Magnussen (Started: 16th, Finished: 17th)
Rating: 6
A step behind Nico through the F1 Spanish GP and that was evident in the overall result for Kevin.
Nico Hulkenberg (Started: 13th, Finished: 11)
Rating: 8
Nico extracted whatever he could from the car and P11 was the best that was on the table.
