The first F1 driver that everyone wants to beat is their teammate. They have the same machinery you do, and if you're able to gain an advantage over them, you tend to become the lead driver within the squad.
While the No.1 and No.2 driver philosophy is something that continues to go out of play in F1, there are still a few teams where you see this being practiced.
Red Bull is one of them, with Max Verstappen having Sergio Perez in a supporting role. With that being said, as we head to the F1 Azerbaijan GP, where do the drivers stack up against their teammates in their head-to-head in qualifying? Let's take a look.
2024 F1 teammates qualifying battle
Red Bull
Max Verstappen 16-0 Sergio Perez
Sprint: Max Verstappen 3-0 Sergio Perez
Max Verstappen has a clean sweep over teammate Sergio Perez in qualifying, which just shows both sides of the argument. The first being the relentless nature of Verstappen being someone who extracts the best possible results from the car almost every time, and secondly, Perez continuing to struggle over a lap.
The fact that Sergio has not even once gotten on top of Max is something very interesting and does give a view of how poorly he has executed his season.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton 4-12 George Russell
Sprint: Lewis Hamilton 1-2 George Russell
These are just not the numbers that one could ever expect from Lewis Hamilton against his teammate, but such has been the situation this season that the F1 legend has been unable to extract the maximum over a lap. What stands out even more is the fact that it's just one-way traffic here, and when that happens, it does put pressure on Lewis even if he doesn't want to admit it.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc 10-5 Carlos Sainz
Sprint: Charles Leclerc 1-2 Carlos Sainz
Charles Leclerc 1-0 Oliver Bearman
Carlos Sainz had started the season arguably stronger than Charles Leclerc at Ferrari, but as the season has gone on, it has become more and more clear who the top driver is within that team.
It has been more or less one-way traffic recently, a development that Carlos might not be too happy with.
McLaren
Lando Norris 14-2 Oscar Piastri
Sprint: Lando Norris 2-1 Oscar Piastri
While there continues to be talk of Oscar Piastri being very close to Lando Norris in terms of performance, it cannot be argued that the more experienced McLaren driver holds a definitive edge. Even though it's very hard to choose between either of those two these days, a 14-2 comparison in qualifying should be an eye-opener.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso 11-5 Lance Stroll
Sprint: Fernando Alonso 1-2 Lance Stroll
There was a time when the Stroll-Alonso head-to-head in qualifying was 4-4, but then Lance commented about it in the media, and the F1 veteran picked things up yet again. The gap is more or less on the expected terms between the two drivers.
Alpine
Esteban Ocon 10-6 Pierre Gasly
Sprint: Esteban Ocon 2-1 Pierre Gasly
Esteban Ocon has been the better Alpine F1 driver this season, and he's maintained that edge over Pierre Gasly in qualifying as well.
After last season where Ocon trailed Gasly in these head-to-heads, it does appear that the driver stepped things up a bit early in the season and hence finds himself in a better position.
Williams
Alex Albon 13-0 Logan Sargeant
Sprint: Alex Albon 1-2 Logan Sargeant
Alex Albon 1-0 Franco Colapinto
Sprint: Alex Albon 0-0 Franco Colapinto
Probably the last time we'll use the Logan Sargeant reference here as the American will not be in F1 anymore. It's more or less a clean slate for Franco Colapinto, who will have his second race weekend in Baku this time around.
RB
Daniel Ricciardo 6-10 Yuki Tsunoda
Sprint qualifying: Daniel Ricciardo 2-1 Yuki Tsunoda
Yuki Tsunoda continues to lead Daniel Ricciardo in the qualifying head-to-head at RB. The gap between the two has now more or less normalized, with both exchanging blows every alternate weekend.
Sauber F1
Valtteri Bottas 15-1 Zhou Guanyu
Sprint: Valtteri Bottas 2-1 Zhou Guanyu
The situation at Sauber F1 shows the kind of desperation that both drivers face. Zhou has been decimated in the head-to-head by Bottas.
Having said that, the Finnish driver is unable to secure a future in F1. Sauber has truly become a team without hope on the grid.
Haas
Kevin Magnussen 3-13 Nico Hulkenberg
Sprint Kevin Magnussen 2-1 Nico Hulkenberg
It's been more or less a one-way street between Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen. The two Haas drivers have done their bit for the team when needed, but the hierarchy cannot be clearer in terms of who is the better F1 driver within the team.
