The first rival any F1 driver wants to beat is his teammate. That's something that has remained universal in the sport since its inception because the teammate is the only driver with the same tools.
There are two different approaches to constructing team structures in F1. The first involves having two of the best possible talents on the grid and then placing them in the car. The second approach is building the team around one driver and then using the second driver as the supporting act.
The current F1 grid has both in place right now. With that being said, how is the intra-team rivalry stacking up across different teams when it comes to qualifying this season? Let's take a look.
2024 F1 Teammates qualifying battle
Red Bull
Max Verstappen 17-1 Sergio Perez
Sprint: Max Verstappen 3-0 Sergio Perez
Verstappen continues to dominate Sergio Perez at Red Bull. The Mexican had a minor reprieve in Baku where he got the upper hand, but other than that, it's been a one-way street.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton 5-13 George Russell
Sprint: Lewis Hamilton 1-2 George Russell
Lewis Hamilton got one over George Russell during the race in Singapore but overall it still does not paint a great picture about the Mercedes driver's run this season compared to his younger teammate.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc 12-5 Carlos Sainz
Sprint: Charles Leclerc 1-2 Carlos Sainz
Charles Leclerc 1-0 Oliver Bearman
After an early stumble for Charles Leclerc where Carlos Sainz had the edge over his teammate, it's been very dominant from the Monagasque driver. The fact that he's more or less wrapped up the intra-team battle with the Spaniard is very impressive.
McLaren
Lando Norris 15-3 Oscar Piastri
Sprint: Lando Norris 2-1 Oscar Piastri
The fact that Lando Norris is 15-3 up on Oscar Piastri in qualifying is astounding. Even though on paper and more or less on track, the two McLaren F1 drivers have been neck and neck, this number does show a very interesting picture.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso 13-5 Lance Stroll
Sprint: Fernando Alonso 1-2 Lance Stroll
Fernando Alonso's early season slumber where the driver was a bit dissuaded by Aston Martin's drop in form has ended and he's dominating Lance Stroll once again. The fact that the Spaniard has wrapped up the qualifying head-to-head shouldn't even come as a surprise.
Alpine
Esteban Ocon 11-7 Pierre Gasly
Sprint: Esteban Ocon 2-1 Pierre Gasly
Esteban Ocon regained some of the lost ground on Pierre Gasly in Singapore as the Haas-bound French driver held a clear edge over his teammate once again in qualifying.
Williams
Alex Albon 2-1 Franco Colapinto
Sprint: Alex Albon 0-0 Franco Colapinto
Alex Albon is facing tough competition from Franco Colapinto in the teammate head-to-head in terms of qualifying but the experienced hand holds a sliver of an advantage over the rookie for now.
RB
Daniel Ricciardo 6-12 Yuki Tsunoda
Sprint: Daniel Ricciardo 2-1 Yuki Tsunoda
In what might be the last appearance for Daniel Ricciardo in this list, the Australian ended the intra-team battle 6-12 down on Yuki Tsunoda. This further cemented the reasoning behind his ouster.
Sauber F1
Valtteri Bottas 17-1 Zhou Guanyu
Sprint: Valtteri Bottas 2-1 Zhou Guanyu
Bottas continues to dominate his Chinese teammate. The Finnish driver looks more or less ready to extend his contract, although nothing has become official yet.
Haas
Kevin Magnussen 3-14 Nico Hulkenberg
Sprint: Kevin Magnussen 2-1 Nico Hulkenberg
Ollie Bearman 1-0 Nico Hulkenberg
Nico Hulkenberg continues to dominate Kevin Magnussen in the teammate head-to-head as the German extends his lead to 14-3 now.
