The 2024 F1 US GP was a nail-biter that ended with Charles Leclerc leading a Ferrari 1-2. It was more or less comfortable for the Italian team, as once Leclerc got the lead, there wasn't much that anybody could do to keep up.
In P3, we had Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver perhaps didn't have the kind of performance he would have expected in the race, and thus, in the end, it was all about fending off Lando Norris.
The race weekend featured some very impressive performances from a lot of drivers, while others probably didn't have the best run. With that being said, how did every driver fare at the F1 US GP? Let's find out as we take a look at the driver ratings for the weekend.
Criteria
- Performance in both qualifying and races is judged.
- Results achieved compared to the potential of the car.
- Mistakes made over the weekend.
- Relative performance against their teammate.
2024 F1 US GP: Rating the drivers
Red Bull
Max Verstappen
Rating: 9
Max Verstappen had a pivotal race weekend in Austin. If this one had seen Lando Norris close the gap even more, things could have become spicier in the championship. Well, that didn't happen.
He was perfect for the sprint part, and one could say that he secured the best possible result under the circumstances in the F1 US GP.
Sergio Perez
Rating: 5.5
George Russell started his race from the pitlane and beat Perez. That's all one needs to know about how the Mexican's weekend went. He was nowhere close to Max once again as normal service resumed.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Rating: 6
A weird race weekend for Lewis Hamilton, where he once appeared to be in dominant form. From that point, there has been a fall from grace. The sprint part was subpar, and then came the race, which was a complete disaster.
George Russell
Rating: 7.5
One might question if George Russell could have done more in the Mercedes this weekend and the answer might be no. But it doesn't change the fact that the new upgraded parts are now in the bin thanks to his ambitious lap that ended in the barriers.
Strong performance overall but compromised by the crash at the F1 US GP.
Ferrari
Charles Leclerc
Rating: 9
It almost seems unfair to just give Leclerc a 9, but we cannot ignore the sprint part of the weekend, which wasn't his best. The Ferrari driver should have scored a full quota this weekend and that would be the disappointing part for him.
With that being said, what a brilliant race from the driver as he left everyone in the lurch in Austin.
Carlos Sainz
Rating: 8.5
Was Carlos the faster Ferrari driver this weekend? Well, that's hard to say but he wasn't miles apart from Charles. A strong result from the Spaniard at the F1 US GP.
McLaren
Lando Norris
Rating: 7.5
The penalty-inducing incident aside, Lando should have finished the F1 US GP ahead of Max. He had the car, he had the performance, but he didn't have the racecraft. Norris would be disappointed after this weekend but heading home after this weekend.
Oscar Piastri
Rating: 6
Six might seem harsh to some, but this was a reality of Piastri's weekend. The pace was not there compared to Lando Norris, and the Australian was the first to admit that Norris was making the car look better than it was. He would be hoping for a bounce back in the coming days.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso
Rating: 7
A frustrated drive from Fernando Alonso at the F1 US GP. The Spaniard was not happy with the performance of the car, as another raft of changes brought by the team didn't work.
The Spaniard did what he could, but it was always a losing battle by the looks of it.
Lance Stroll
Rating: 4.5
An anonymous weekend for the Canadian, as he was once again just a step behind his teammate.
Alpine
Pierre Gasly
Rating: 7
A decent weekend for Gasly, who got compromised because of his early pitstop in the race. The upgraded Alpine has some strong points for sure, but the car is just too far behind the front-running midfield teams now.
Esteban Ocon
Rating: 6.5
It's becoming harder to judge how good or bad a weekend Esteban Ocon has had, especially since the driver has been running outdated parts on the car for a while now. The F1 US GP was no different, as it turns out, as the Frenchman's race also got compromised by contact with Alex Albon at the start.
Williams
Alex Albon
Rating: 5.5
Things have not been going well for Alex Albon since Franco Colapinto has stepped up at Williams. This was another weekend where he was outperformed by his teammate.
Franco Colapinto
Rating: 8
Another brilliant race from the cool, calm, and collected Argentinian. This was a drive that once again made a compelling case for keeping him on the grid for 2025. Williams has a big problem now as the F1 US GP is now going to bring more suitors and maybe a few vultures that want a piece of Franco.
V-Ca-RB
Liam Lawson
Rating: 8
What a start to life at RB for Liam Lawson. He made the most of the strategy he had at the F1 US GP and was right alongside Yuki Tsunoda as the weekend progressed. Five more races where he does this, and the seat on the senior team would be his.
Yuki Tsunoda
Rating: 6
If anything, Yuki Tsunoda showed a level of immaturity at the F1 US GP, which further cemented a case against him getting the seat at Red Bull. He was quick but he wasn't immune to just far too many mistakes that cost him ultimately.
Stake F1 Sauber
Valtteri Bottas
Rating: 6
Bottas is doing what he can in the horribly slow Sauber. He's got the better of his teammate repeatedly, and for the Finnish driver, this might just be it when it comes to showing what is possible. At the end of the day, he needs a better car and a better benchmark to show what he can do.
Guanyu Zhou
Rating: 5
Spinning off in the race for no reason was a bit strange for the Chinese driver, but the bottom line remains the same for Zhou, he's not showing anything remotely strong for securing an F1 future.
Haas F1
Kevin Magnussen
Rating: 7.5
Kevin Magnussen should be a bit angry at not making the most of the car he had under him. The driver was pushed into a two-stopper because his second stint was starting to suffer. The unfortunate reality of his third stint, however, was a lack of pace, which meant he couldn't replicate the strong showing of the sprint.
Nico Hulkenberg
Rating: 8
A solid showing by the Hulk at the F1 US GP. Making his way through the field and showing impressive race pace while keeping the tires alive on Sunday helped the German climb his way through the field and secure a brilliant result for Haas.
