Throughout the year the top teams of Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren were competing for both championships on offer making it an exciting time for the fans of the sport.
It all went down to the final race in the desert of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as this was the second time that F1 would take to the Yas Marina Circuit.
Vettel, Webber, Alonso and Hamilton were all in contention for the driver's championship.
A pole lap from Vettel was exactly the start to the weekend he needed in the championship decider for the following day.
His rivals qualified in the top five with Alonso favourite to take home his third world championship.
But a slip up from both Alonso and Webber in the race saw them hanging behind Renault's Vitaly Petrov as they had no answer to overtaking the Russian.
Vettel maintained his pole position and won one of the biggest races of his career so far.
A first world championship at just 23 years old marks Vettel as the youngest world champion still to this very day in F1 history.
