We may be heading towards the end of this season comes but for me it may just be the beginning. Since last season I’ve been trying to make a points system where the qualifying positions are also to be considered in the final points tally. In my 8 seasons of following this wonderful sport, I have always felt for the the driver who dominates on a Saturday only to come a few spots behind the eventual winner and all of a sudden all of his hard work over the weekend especially the Qualifying yields no result so finally I’ve developed a points scheme that will ensure that the Saturday performances of the drivers will somehow affect their points eventually. So here’s how the system worksIt is based on a multiplier system. So the final race points will be multiplied by a multiplier which will be a result of their grid positions at the start of the race.
Now what is the multiplier? The multiplier will be based on the following formulaTotal number of drivers-Number of drivers ahead of you/Total number of driversConfused? Here’s an example of the Australian GP,2011Sebastian Vettel got the pole position so his multiplier would be24-0/24=1 so now whatever Vettel scored got multiplied by 1 i.e he scores a full 25Now Lewis Hamilton started second on the grid so his multiplier would be24-1/24=0.958So Lewis’ 18 points get multiplied by 0.958 which shall be 17.250
Here’s a comparative list of all the points scoring drivers of the Australian GP,2011CS RSVettel 25 25Hamilton 18 17.25Petrov 15 11.85Alonso 12 10Webber 10 9.167Button 8 7Massa 6 4.25Buemi 4 2.5Sutil 2 0.75di Resta 1 0.458CS- Current Scheme ; RS – Revised SchemeSo here we see that Vettel gets further advantage of three quarters of a point because his saturday performance was better than Hamilton’s. Also the difference between Webber and Alonso is lessened by 1.167 points as Mark managed to line up ahead of Alonso.A look at the difference between the two RBRs will show that Vettel’s pole does give him an advantage of 0.833 over his team mate.Compare the two Force India’s and all your doubts should get clearedI’ve rounded off the revised points upto 3 decimal points considering how competitive the season gets in the end.(This season will obviously not show a lot of changes as RBR has dominated the Qualifying)Currently the point difference may not seem that much but at the end of the season it could be really materialistic given how close the past few seasons have been.Basically this system will enhance the value of Saturday from the Championship perspective not just in terms of importance but also the eventual points.
