Adrian Newey has come under extreme criticism from former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos for his appearance at Aston Martin. The engineer has announced that he's leaving his current team at Milton Keynes and will be moving to Aston Martin.
As part of the announcement, Adrian Newey was part of the huge event organized by Lawrence Stroll at Silverstone. At Aston Martin's headquarters, Stroll announced that Newey was going to be a part of the team from 2025 onwards. The event was held on a large scale and had plenty of media presence as well.
One thing that did, however, stand out and was even pointed out by Red Bull boss Christian Horner was that Newey was still going to be part of the Austrian team until next year. His appearing at an Aston Martin event while he's still a Red Bull employee was not desirable.
Notably, even Lewis Hamilton, who was announced to be a Ferrari driver in 2025, has made sure he's not seen in association with the Italian team in any way. Talking about Adrian Newey's appearance at Aston Martin, former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos was not impressed. Speaking to Ziggo Sports, he said:
“What are you going to do there then? He just told a story in front of an Aston Martin logo, and then you get in your little car, and you drive to Milton Keynes, and you walk into Red Bull to work on your RB17 again. You think that’s possible?! Do you think you can get away with this?"
“I understand now that the team is also taking him off the racing team, and not sending him to races anymore. He can now finish the RB17 from a distance. “That’s not a nice exit after so much success," Doornbos added.
Red Bull's Christian Horner not impressed by Adrian Newey's appearance at Aston Martin event
Red Bull boss Christian Horner was also not impressed by Adrian Newey's appearance at the event held by Aston Martin. Horner was questioned about Newey making an appearance at the rival team's headquarters, to which the team principal pointed out that maybe this was done prematurely because Newey is still part of the Red Bull Racing. He said:
“Yes, it was obviously a large announcement by Aston. Obviously it was a big moment for that team, and they chose to celebrate it, perhaps potentially slightly prematurely, before he’s finished his contract with Red Bull Racing. But obviously it was a big moment for that team.”
Adrian Newey surprised everyone early in the year when he announced that he was moving out of Red Bull. He had been part of the team's success for the last two decades, and the association had paid dividends to both parties.
Red Bull are presently second in the Constructors' Championship this year with 456 points, while Aston Martin are fifth with just 82 points.
